Speeding ticket on the way

My husband has received two speeding tickets in the last six months for which they have held his license in lieu of bail. Will DCL accept maybe his gun card as picture ID, or do I need to just drive myself as he "CAN'T DRIVE 55"? Just panicing ahead of time.

Oh my! Is the gun card issued by the government? DCL states:

Acceptable forms of picture identification are state driver’s license, or federal, state or local government photo ID card.

I don't think I'd want to take any chances on this and you might consider getting passports before your trip just in case.

What bad luck! Hubby has a lead foot, too. He was driving for 20 years before he received his first speeding ticket. Then 6 months later, he received a second one. No points, just fines. We were out of state both times. Now, he's a model driver. 5-10 above and on I-95, you're going slow to moderate.

I'd get a passport.

Most offices where you can get a driver's liscenmce you can also have a State ID card issued to you. He might want to look into that.

Georgia used to hold the driver's license in lieu of bond, but I think they've been getting away from that. The idea is that you weren't likely to skip bond if you had to get your drivers' license back, but they've been realizing the inconvenience it causes.

The last time I got a speeding ticket (over 5 years ago), the officer was going to keep my license, but I asked him politely not to. I was traveling on business during that period and needed to rent a car every week. Car rental agencies will not accept a citation in lieu of an actual license. When I explained that to the officer, he relented and allowed me to keep my license.

Before our cruise in January I went to the Drivers License Bureau and got a state ID card, just as a backup in case I lost / or ID was stolen. Didn't have to use it, but it nice not to have to worry.

Samsma - What type of "gun card" does he have? If it is a current Concealed Weapons Permit, then yes, that is a government issued ID and since among its requirements is a very thorough background check before issuance, DCL would <I>probably</I> accept that as a picture ID. However, the SAFEST is to always travel with a valid passport. You never know when you might be diverted or stuck somewhere, medical reasons, etc.

The Tennessee Handgun carry permit looks exactly like the state driver license. The picture is just on the opposite side of the license. It is issued by the department of safety the same people that issue drivers license. Permits here have the same number as your drivers license. That way when an officer pulls up your driver license your handgun permit pops up also. Mike

That's cool, papa! But does Illinois do that also? That's the state in question, right? It would be good if all states did that.

Should your lead footed husband get stopped on the way to the cruise ship, there are alternatives to the license being held as bail. Ask to post a cash bond. You will be asked to put up cash, to insure his appearence in court (make sure he shows up, or you will lose the money and an arrest warrant may be issued).

You might also ask if there is a "forfeiture bond" available. This allows you to post bond, and use the bond to pay your fine, without showing for court. You normally can plead guilty by mail. This isn't available everywhere, so you might ask.

Lastly, the best way to avoid this is a rolled up newspaper. Whenever the speed exceeds the limit, WHACK!!!!

The Illinois FOID card is issued by the Illinois State Police. He should be able to show the ticket and use the FOID for photo ID. He can also run to the Secretary of State's office and get a State issued photo ID. Like a driver's license, but doesn't give driving privs.

I was on AAA website a few days ago, and according to their site you can give your AAA card in lieu of your drivers license. Can anyone confirm this? I've worried about that also. My DH also has a lead foot and thought this would be good to have-just in case.

AAA used to print the information on the back of their cards. My card doesn't have anything on it about bond.

I believe that it is up to the jurisdiction (ultimately, the judge) to determine what form of assurance (bond) they will take. Some will only take cash, some will take a bondsman's bond, some take driver licenses in lieu of bond.

There is no "requirement" to take a AAA card as bond. I wouldn't depend on it to get you out of a jam.
