I`ve got a big dilemma here, yesterday i was out clearing the garden and when i came back indoors the neighbours cat was sat in our living room. I put him outside and sat down with a coffee (as you do), when i noticed an awful smell. I could`nt for the life of me think were it was coming from, until i moved the sofa. Yes you`ve guessed it people the afore mentioned Cat had been behind there, and well made himself known  . Im totally outraged, more so because i only had the carpet fitted 2 months ago. I`ve tried everything to get rid of the smell, im more infuriated because i dont have pets of my own, then someone elses has the nerve to come in and make a mess. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to get rid of this god awful smell? please please let me know.I`ll be your friend forever .....

How frustrating!! Go out and get a bottle of Nature's Miracle. Soak the area and cover it in plastic for at least 24 hours. The intructions are on the back. It's a natural enzyme (non chemical) that basically eats what causes the offending odor. It really works!

Nature's miracle is great! Be warned it does take awhile for the smell to completely dissapate.

I can't suggest anything to do about the smell but I have discreetly disposed of a few cats in my day.

I hope that's a joke.:scared1:

OP, not that it helps now, but keep your door closed next time!!!!

Honestly, if it was #1 and soaked through to the underpad, I'd have the area professionally cleaned and the underpad replaced. Otherwise, that smell will always bother you. If it was #2, I'd still have the area professionally cleaned. (When you clean it yourself there's a tendency to soak the pad, and the pad then becomes moldy and smelly. This doesn't happen when cleaned professionally.) Make sure the cleaners know what happened so they can do just that spot with the right cleaners.

I would let my neighbors know what happened and give them the bill. But even if they didn't pay it, I'd still go ahead as outlined above. Those odors are notoriously difficult to get rid of. If you were a pet owner, I'd say you'll have other odors anyway. But since you're not and the carpet is brand new, I don't think it's fair you have to deal with that. And oh yes, I'd keep my door shut, too. ;)

Probably not a good thing to joke about around here. Lots of pet lovers.

And if it wasn't a joke, then :sad2:

Natures miracle works but it will take a few days.

At least it's a funny story! Try not to be mad. It's just a cat and life happens! Maybe you could take a whiz on kitty and send him back home!

Sorry if I offended anyone - it was meant as a joke - sorta.

I have owned several cats and love them dearly but stray wild ones are out of control. If I collect them and take them to the pound in my area, they will hold the cat for 3 days and then exterminate it at my expense to the tune of $40! So much for trying to be the nice guy and do it right. So occasionally I have cut out the middle man and allowed it to cost me nothing more than a bullet.

Wow, just wow. Aren't you some kind of hero. :sad2:

Would you rather let the animals suffer - freeze to death - fight with each other - scrounge around in trash for food - spread disease that harms humans - destroy property or die and quick painless death?

The cat was called the neighbor's cat and doesn't appear to be a stray. Shooting a defenseless animal isn't cool and particularly not if it belongs to someone even if they aren't controlling it properly.

I wonder why the cat did that? Mine has gotten out and visited neighbors but all he seems to do is meow at them.

Every carpet guy I've ever talked to reccomended 1cup vinegar + 1 cup water and saturate the area. There is something in the vinegar that helps to neutralize the smell.

Nature's Miracle also works well.

I knew that's what you were going to say so let me tell you what I've done. I've kept a few, I've caught and domesticated other and then had people adopt them. I've never had to bring them to the pound but I would if there was no alternative.

What I would never ever do is shoot one. All life is cheapened by the cost cutting bullet to the head of an animal who's only crime was to be born.

But you just keep telling yourself you're doing the humane thing. I'm sure you'll sleep well tonight.

The pound charges you for bringing them strays? That's not right. They are supposed to be city funded and paid for by taxes, right? Ours doesn't charge if you bring in a stray....not that you can usually catch them.

OP, I've used the vinegar solution before with good results.

can you shoot rats? how about coyotes in your yard? what about crows the size of turkeys that I've seen scoop up and eat baby ducks (i'm still traumatized by that one!)? rabid dogs like ole yeller?

where's the line? are feral cats safe because some are domesticated? i'm just curious...don't plan on shooting anything. i did just buy a flyswatter...is that okay?

op----no advice. good luck.

Then bring them to a different shelter. The shelter near me will always take in a stray and it does not kill them.
