Spectrum Moms Take on The World! Our Last Day...Multiple Posts!

I had promised my travel mates to have this up by Sunday, sorry I'm a couple days late :) here is our story...

Our family has not yet taken a trip to Disney World, though my husband and I did honeymoon there, and I have taken Jack to Disneyland twice. We grow more excited every day for our trip in March 2011.

Five and a half years ago I gave birth to a beautiful 10 lb baby boy, and we named him Jack (after my husbands’ grandfather). The birth did not go exactly as planned, everything became kind of like a blur…he was born, they let me see him for what felt like a second and then he got rushed off to the NICU. After a thorough examination, they brought him to me in my room, and after that I didn’t let him out of my sight. (They had rushed him off due to some minor complications during delivery).

The first year was challenging, he was a colicky baby and cried all day and night. Aside from him being colicky, he seemed to develop normally. He met all his milestones at the “suggested” age or slightly after. He started babbling, making sounds, and even forming words.

Then somewhere between 18 months and 2 years old, he didn’t have any words anymore. He cried when I tried to take him on play dates and preferred to just drive cars around the table or line them up across the floor. Our pediatrician referred us to early intervention services, where we quickly learned the paperwork and waiting game. 4-6 months later Jack was evaluated and only qualified for speech therapy.

I gave birth to a second child and we moved to North Carolina and more issues arose and he seemed to be falling farther behind, outings became impossible, and I couldn’t handle my child and knew I needed more help than just speech. Jack was 3 now, he got several evaluations, and then they sat us down and told us that our son was on the autism spectrum. I think I knew all along, but was in denial…

Fast forward two years….over the course of the past two years Jack received Occupational therapy, speech therapy, was in a self contained special education class, gone on the gluten free & casein free diet, is receiving ABA, and has had tremendous growth.
Just in the last 6 months he has had the most growth, this school year he became part of a special program for children on the autism spectrum. (He actually started going early summer, off and on for testing and social game days) It’s in a private school setting; he spends part of his day in a typical kindergarten class and then goes back to the classroom for the program he is part of to work on things he is behind in or behaviors he needs to work on.

Like some of the other moms have stated, I also watch my 2 yo like a hawk, and over analyze everything he does.

When I look at Jack, I see a happy, fun loving, intelligent five year old boy, and I wish everyone could see that too. I would do anything for him; he changed my life in so many ways. He made me a better person and has opened up many experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I feel so blessed to be his Mom.

Love this picture!

Well said Jessica. The odd time someone will say to me, "How can you do it?" and of course the answer is, "How could I not?"

I really like the Chmolland piece. Going to print it out for the 4s teachers at my school who have a child in their class on the spectrum. Jessica. your story was very touching-more tissues needed over here.

It has become one of my favorite pictures of him recently. Yep, well said Tracy. I cut my story down a lot, I was going to include the conversation I had one day with my old co-workers when we did the puzzle piece campaign. They all said they just couldn't do it, and I told them if given such a blessing, they would be able to. God chose me for a reason, and I'm so glad he did.

Thanks, you can imagine the tears I had writing it. I hadn't really put it all out there like that before. Only this past year have I begun to tell our story and speaking out for autism. It's been an emotional year.

For the next little game we are going to have a Scavenger Hunt… sponsored by our DIS friends! :thumbsup2

You all get to submit your ideas for the seven items (one per mom) we are going to look for during our trip. We will be visiting all four parks so any little secret spot in any park is up for grabs... I suppose Animal Kingdom Lodge is game too!

Maybe you have a simple idea and would like to see a mom standing in front of your favorite attraction or maybe you want to put us to the test, give us a good challenge, make us search high & low for a hidden Disney gem.

Give us your best ideas and we’ll report back with a photo of the chosen mom with her item.

Part one of the challenge is to submit your ideas. We'll choose seven of them for our scavenger hunt. Part two will be another numbers game where you will get to match up each item with a mom without knowing who you are choosing!

Put on your thinking caps and give us your best suggestions! :scratchin We'll take suggestions for one week. :hourglass

oh boy....should we be nervous...can't wait to see what you guys come up with :teacher:

Jess thanks for your story, the boys look like their Daddy huh?

Welcomes all around to more new readers and thanks for joining us for this fun adventure!

I'm all caught up now. It is amazing to read about the support you are all giving each other. Makes me feel so :goodvibes:goodvibes

You are all so positive about your children and I love the way you choose to look on the bright side of things. All children are blessings and you are all wonderful mothers and your DH's are so wonderful to recognize that you deserve a break too!

I am looking forward to your planning and adventures!:surfweb:

Oh oh ladies, it's awfully quiet over here.... I have a feeling some quite unusual things are going to filter in! :rotfl2:

Thank you, so very sweet of you to say. :goodvibes I'd like to give a shout out to the siblings of our children too. Despite the challenges they can and do face, my boys have become protective and compassionate of their sister. Makes a Mama proud!

Ok - since no one has taken the bait yet for the scavenger hunt - I have one. How about one of the Moms has her picture taken with on the the wire and bead animal sculptures. Or to make it a little harder - how about specifically with a frog - any size.

The reason behind this is that I wanted one - didn't get it when I saw it :sad2:, couldn't find it again once I decided I was going to get it :confused3....wound up getting a lizard instead :rolleyes1 But I would still like a frog :thumbsup2

Hey, Jessica!

Your boys are beautiful! And did anyone else catch the mention of giving birth to a ten-pound baby?! :worship:

I'm so happy that I'll be getting the chance to meet you soon... you sound like a great person and a wonderful Spectrum Mom! :grouphug:

Kathy

Since Danica was 9 lbs., a 10 pounder doesn't seem like a whole lot more :rotfl2:

Sounds good... Are those sculptures at AKL or at Animal Kingdom? :confused3

Kathy

I've seen them several different places - at Animal Kingdom, at AKL, even at Hollywood Studios. Don't recall if I saw them at MK or Epcot. They are souvenirs - not permanent sculptures. I just wasn't sure what else to call them.

Oh, I see!

When you said "sculpture" I immediately thought of all the African artwork at Kidani and AKL. I'm sure there is a frog or two in there somewhere!
