Okay, I know this is a very basic question, but on our visit last year, we were in the worst possible place for Spectromagic and Wishes. Any tips on the best places to view??

For Wishes, we stood on the bridge into FutureWorld (I think that's what it's called) - it's to the right hand side of the castle - it was the best spot we've had so far.
For Spectromagic - good luck! Even getting a spot early along the route, people seem to think they can just jump in front of you and have a seat

I hated being stuck too far in and just played it safe and stood on Main Street. Of course you have the usual people who will work their way in front of you which i hate but we did end up in the back and a nice woman let my little girl sit up front with her and her daughter.
we also waited in the front near the enterance as we arrived about an hour before the spectro parade and we had the best seats yes a few people tried to squeeze in but i stood my ground and nobody squeezed in. sometimes you have to be tough i guess it worked for me
We sit on one the benches coming out of Adventure land, there is the bench, a fence then just grass, when the parade goes by, it crosses that bridge and no one is allowed to stand there. I mean it's not extreme close up but, we get to sit down.
My favorite spot it on the curb in front of the bakery on Main Street. If we want to sit there we sit down about an hour before the parade. If you have a group you can always send someone for fast passes or a snack to occupy you during your wait. Then there is always people to watch. Again, stand your ground because someone will ALWAYS try to crowd in. Sorry! I have no problem telling them that we have been waiting for an hour and that's why we have those seats. Our first park visit we learned this lesson quickly because we didn't have a very good spot for the parade. We have also watched in Sleepy Hollow but didn't have a curb to sit on...Now for Wishes our favorite spot is just in front of the castle OR if you are lucky enough to book a Wishes Cruise there is nothing like seeing the fireworks from a boat out in front of the park!
We just got back on Tuesday and I would say the best place to watch Spectromagic was the platform of the train station. The Unofficial Guide said to get there 45 minutes to an hour before the parade to get a seat. We were there an hour and a half before the start of Spectromagic and the seats were all taken but it still was the best place to see the parade. We stayed there for Wishes too and it was ok, not fantastic but ok.
Last year we booked dinner at the California Grille atop the Contemporary during wishes. When the fireworks start the lights dim in the restaurant and they pipe in the music from the show, but you can also go out on to the roof. Heres the key though, walk to the furthest end of the roof towards the MK and Jump! Just kidding. There is a flight of stairs there, walk down a flight and there you have it, Your own private balcony and a beautiful view of the MK and Wishes. I believe you can also get to a balcony from the main concourse on the side that faces the MK.
