I have been doing lots of research (dpreview.com and steves-digicams.com and others) in preparation for my first digital camera purchase. I have narrowed it down to a few that meet my criteria, and I was wondering whether you guys could give me your input or suggest a model that I've overlooked. Here are my specs:
A point and shoot that is fairly simple to use --will likely be used mostly in 'dummy' mode with a minimum of tinkering by me. The less large and clunky the better. To be used mainly for vacation pics and family events.
Must haves: At least 5 mp, at least 4x optical zoom, image stabilization
Preferred (but not absolutely necessary)features: AA batteries, SD memory
I've identified the following:
1. Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LZ5 (approx. $250-280)
2. Canon SD700IS (mid $400s)
3. From lurking on this board, I have also noticed several posters singing the praises of the Canon S2IS (low to mid $300s), although my first impression is that it may be a bit bulky for me, especially since part of my reason for going digital is to 'streamline' a bit.
I know that many folks swear by their Canons, but I also have some concern about the incidence of an E18 error in many Canon models that renders them useless, and Canon's lack of support on the matter. I have run across this several times in my research, and it has me a little freaked out
(especially considering the price of the SD700IS).
Any constructive input you can give me, including experience with the above or recommendations of models that I may have overlooked, would be great. Thanks in advance.
