I love spicy foods, usually hot Indian curries, Mexican with fresh jalapenos, etc., and thought we'd try Boma on our upcoming trip. Then I read somewhere that most foods at Boma are spiced with cinnamon and coriander/cilantro. Meh, a little of those go a long way. I'd also read many of the non-dessert offerings are very sweet. I'm not afraid of spiciness or new flavors, just wondering if the comments are accurate. I'm beginning to lean towards Tusker House instead because of one magical food: samosas!

I am curious too. My family loves spicy foods but for health reasons I can not eat them. No not stomach issues. I had radiation to the head and neck so the tissue lining is very thin and hot spicy foods BURN.

I didn't find anything too spicy at Boma except for the potatoes with Afritude. A lot of things had the savory cinnamon flavor but, all in all, there are tons of things to eat that tasted really great.

Although...TH is one of our absolute favorite places to eat.

The spices used in many of the recipes at Boma are not the "hot" kind. If you're expecting Mexican-style hotness you are going to be surprised.

I found many of the dishes to be on the sweet side. Yes they do use cinnamon quite a bit, saffron too. The only thing I remember being burn-your-tongue kind of spicy were the potatoes.

I've been to Boma quite a few times and the previous poster is correct. The spices are typically not "hot", many of them are actually quite sweet. There is quite a lot of cinnamon and other similar flavors. The results are same at the Tusker House.

I agree. The flavors tend to be sweet and not hot.

Like everyone else had been saying ....not spicy but a decent amount of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and the like. It seems the food swings between those and some rather plain tasting things, which, all it all, balances things out. Be sure to try EVERYTHING.

We absolutely LOVED Boma and I have 3 picky eaters.

I agree the flavors at Boma are definately not *hot* or *spicy*..but they are pretty bold. I found that there was a common spice that seemed to be used in most of the dishes (including the Mara). We didn't like that particular flavor so we didn't love Boma. All the meats that we ate during our stay at AKL seemed to have that particular *flavor*. I also agree that some of the savory dishes were very sweet. Once of the soups in particular I remember as being sooo sweet I couldn't eat it. There are lots of choices so I would recommend trying it once. You may love it (like many do).

[Belle4mygrl...please, you didn't hijack the thread! :goodvibes We were both looking for very similar information.]

Hmm, and Tusker House is the same as Boma in terms of having one or two spices being dominant in most of the foods? You can tell I'm circling back to samosas again...!

What are samosa's?

Boma has Zebra Domes.......people will do almost anything for Zebra Domes..........

What are samosa's?

It's like a stuffed pastry, pan fried, with vegetables or meat inside. I think Boma has the curried veggies samosas sometimes. The new place in Kidani Village must serve them too since it's a very popular Indian food.
Mmmmmm samosas :woohoo:

Another great thread, both Boma and Tusker House were on my list of possible places to eat. I know I would find foods I would like. I am used to foods cooked with cinnamon sticks, allspice, etc but the foods are not sweet. My DH would hate that. While he tolerates spice because I can be heavy handed with the peppers:rolleyes1, but he doesn't like any foods (except deserts) that are sweet.

Thanks again DIS! Crossing those off my list.

I've been to Boma several times for dinner. The spices are not hot except for the potatoes, at times. Still, this is not something extremely hot; it just has a kick. There is a lot of flavor from cinnamon, etc., but I wouldn't necessarily call the dishes overly sweet. The flavor is just different. I think you'll enjoy it a lot.
