Just posted this on the DVC board in response to advice regarding requesting a 1st floor room or elevator building at OKW due to medical reasons. The two suggestions were basically calling and requesting a 1st fl. room or elevator building through DVC MS for medical reasons or requesting a HC accessible room through DVC MS.

Thank you everyone for your assistance. We really do not need the additional handicap accessible features and would feel guilty if we had the room and someone else could have used it. Yes, these are disabilities, however, not to the extent that we would need a HC accessible room. The biggest issue I have is having the scooter and my wife & FIL being able to walk up and down stairs if we were given a 2nd or 3rd floor room without an elevator. I called DVC MS and asked for a 1st floor room or building with an elevator for medical reasons. The MS agent stated she noted my request. Sue....If you read this, how would I know if it is on my confirmation sheet as I already received the 1st one which was SSR and now that I switched to OKW, I made this request after we had already accepted the transfer - the confirmation sheet was probably already completed. Is there a way to ask for a new one with this information on it?
Btw, Sue, you have helped me before on the disabilities board and now over here - DVC. Thanks! Jim

When I stayed at OKW, I called and explained that while I did not need an accessible room, I did need one on either the first floor or in a building with an elevator - because of the ECV. Member Services transferred me to Special Services and we worked it all out. Come to find out, I did need an accessible room,,, because the regular beds were too high. I'm just over five feet tall and was recovering from a broken hip - I found myself having to sprawl across the bed on an angle and haul myself up. Fortunately, they were able to find me a suitable room the next day.

Jim, I made a similar request of Member Services when I made our OKW reservation. When I received our first confirmation, the request was not on it, so I called back and confirmed they had the request in the system. The CM assured me it was there and she mailed me a confirmation which showed my request. However, the request is just that and not a guarantee, as the CM with Member Services pointed out more than once, even though it is a request for medical reasons.

If it is not written on your confirmation, you can call and make sure it's in the computer, then ask them to send another copy. We have done that before. (It should say "First floor or elevator for medical needs" or something similar.

They do fill the medical requests before other requests for the same thing. If you are requesting a Grand Villa at OKW, you need to make a confirmed reservation for a handicapped one. For Studios, 1 and 2 bedrooms, you should not have a problem with a medical request.

We are traveling with my 80 year old mom who had knee replacement in August. Also staying at OKW. I have the 1st floor for medical challanges listed on my ressie. Now the last time we traveled with mom our reservation also said medical challenges for 1st floor , but when we checked in around 5 on a Sat.the cm said uh oh, this should have blocked , but wasn't. They gave us a third floor room. After much negotiation we were moved the next morning. Naturally I want to avoid that this time. Would it help to call the front desk the day before to remind them that the room should be blocked and a hold put on the room so we are not "bumped" so to speak by earlier arrivals? Has anyone done this with a good outcome? Any and all advice appreciated.

We faced the same issue for our June trip (needing 1st or elevator bldg. for an ECV but not handicapped room). We received exactly what we requested. We understood medical requests couldn't be guaranteed, and we were prepared to request a room change....and I was prepared to have to go to where ever they would have parked the ecv overnight to deliver and fetch it for my husband.
