First, background if you will.

Last summer, my family and I were at WDW and I ordered 3 birthday cakes. One for my mom, one for my DD and one for my DS. Each cake was HUGE. I got my DD a 10" cake from the GF bakery.

Needless to say, we had a TON of cake. I even shared the cake from the GF with the table next to us and we still had cake that we somehow managed to get home.

So this year everyone is like "Do NOT order any cakes!"

But, my DD is turning 3 while we're at Disney and we are having her birthday lunch at Cinderella's Royal Table. I want to get her a cake - but not a huge one. I also don't care for the standard 6" cakes that you can get when you get to the restaurant. So, should I order one small (6" or 8") cake special for DD's birthday or should I just have the standard cake or even no cake? But I mean, what's a birthday without cake?!?

Will the restaurants give them anything during birthday meals? I ask b/c I went through the same dilema last year as DD turned 3 during the trip. I had the "what is a birthday without cake" concern. In the end I decided that since we were on the DDP, there was just no way we could possibly eat cake along with the dessert that came with the plan and so I didn't get it.

But we ate at 1900 PF and they gave her a special birthday cupcake (along with a signed placemat, special crown, and maybe something else) and made a big fuss over her. At Chef MIckeys (later in the week, not even on her actual birthday) they gave her a cupcake and signed placemat and had everyone sing to her. With all that it was more than enough. Honestly, she had no idea she didn't get a cake. We still did cake at home for her birthday party.

I was offered the option of buying the slipper for DD's birthday when I noted it on our ADR at CRT. But we are going for breakfast so I dont think we will do it. You could have it done up for a little girl instead of a cake she would get her own special dessert.

A birthday without cake is what you make of it, just as a birthday with cake is what you make of it. :)

Today is my DD's 4th birthday. We were at WDW two weeks ago, and she saw a cake (somewhere on the Boardwalk - she went with her grandparents that evening, and they have no memory of it) that was her must-have birthday cake. Huge, pink and purple frosted, princess-bedecked. She's talked for two weeks about the pink and purple princess cake she was going to have for her birthday.

Last night she got to make her birthday cake to take to preschool. We made it from a mix, because I have no cake-mojo, but she did everything but measure, run the hand mixer, and use the oven. There were lots of options: colored cake vs. white, single-color vs. multi-color swirl, jam-frosted vs. plain, jam-filled vs. plain, cupcakes vs. cake, food coloring "paint," sprinkles and jimmies and colored sugar.

She made plain white cupcakes, most with just blue colored sugar sprinkled on top. They're all different sizes. Each cupcake has one decorated spot, and the rest is just plain cake. Some of them have giant dents where the cake couldn't hold up to the weight of the sugar. And those cupcakes are the most beautiful birthday cake in the world in her eyes, because she made them herself.

Now, there's nothing wrong with a big, fancy cake. I love cake, and don't need a special occasion to enjoy one. ;) But birthdays aren't really about cakes (or presents, even.) At least not IMHO.

Wow, great cakes! We ordered a cake for our anniversary and while it was beautiful, it wound up costing us over 70 dollars. We were told 35.00. So I would say, just be careful and keep it simple. Also, depending on where you eat, they may have special desserts for your birthday girl!
