Staying dry...sorta. No rain, but the heat and humidty have been rough.

Loved that show.....

Dixie McCall, R.N., was played by actress Julie London. Ms. London was the ex-wife of Jack Webb, producer of the series, and during the series was the real-life wife of actor Bobby Troup.

Dixie was the head nurse in Rampart's emergency room. Dixie served at a field hospital in the Korean War. In the pilot episode, there was a romantic relationship shown between Dixie and Dr. Brackett, but this story line was not developed during the series.
Julie London passed away, October 18, 2000.

Emergency- Hmm, I haven't seen that show.
Honestly as an ICU- it can be easy to be seen as a Nurse Ratched. You have to be willing to act as an advocate for your patient and act for their best interest- when they are unable to do so. Sometimes that means you are seen as harsh with family, physicians, coworkers,...yourself. You have to be willing to be persistent in getting what you think they need. That can mean calling four doctors until one of them cares enough to take the time to listen. (This usually doesn't happen.) Sometimes you also get to explain to their loved ones- that having their face two inches infront of the sedated patient and yelling, "I love you" isn't the best thing. Frequently you see non-verbal patients "getting" upset- even though their family cannot recognize what is happening. Their blood pressure and heart rate goes up. They start bucking the vent. The drains in their brain starts pouring out more fluid. You learn to recognize anxiety in different ways.
What happens more often, is that you are recognized as someone who IS acting as an advocate for their loved one- and are perceived as Florence, while the physicians are seen as the evil ones.

I think "the public" have an odd perspective of what nurses really do. Many think all we do is mindlessly give meds and that the doctors do everything. It's hard to explain and every speciality does different things and has different levels of responsibility and autonomy. Critical care nurses like what we do for the high level of autonomy. Basically we are micromanagers.....
