Have you ever seen her show where she goes places and tries to eat all day on just $40?

I have started noticing she doesn't really tip very well if at all. She will have a $12 ticket and say her TAX & TIP were a dollar something. Just the tax would be almost a dollar and a tip, a good tip on a $12 ticket would be $2.40. So she is not really tipping.

Once I noticed that I started watching what her TAX & TIP were for every meal and she is only really leaving less than one dollar for a tip every time. Sometimes just 50 cents or less.

It made me rethink how I feel about her.

If she is NOT tipping to save money then don't say anything about the tip just tell how much the tax cost and leave the tip completely out of it. But to be fair if you are going to try to eat on a $40 a day budget then tips are part of that cost at table service meals.

I am going to post this here so that if you don't read all the way through these posts. If you don't believe she is a bad tipper or that ppl don't think of her as a bad tipper GOOGLE "Rachael Ray bad tipper" and read all about it.

I bet that they leave more, they just factor in the lower amount to say within the $40. I wonder if the waiters are paid for being on the show?

It's a TV show. There is a lot of things that happen behind the scenes I am sure. I wouldn't judge how she tips based off of a scripted show where the point is to only spend a specific amount a day.

If somebody went to the same resturants and ordered the same thing, by leaving the correct tip that would put over budget would it not? Some episodes she is barley left with change. I would say that is bogus info. JMHO

Aren't those shows old? I remember watching it and she tipped 10%. 10% was the norm not that many years ago.

That must have been quite a while ago. When I waited tables in the early 90's, the norm was 15% even then, and we're going back 20 years! I can't imagine when 10% would have been...or maybe it's a regional thing?!

I'm married 35 years and 10% was never the norm in our locale.

I'm sure the servers are paid to be on the show, and plus I'm sure they are paid more on top of what she leaves for a tip.

If not I'm sure we would all be hearing about hw Rachel Ray is a horrible tipper in the medai

It depends on where you are. In many European countries, service charge is included within the bill, and a tip is considered just rounding up to the nearest whole currency. Tipping is NOT customary or expected in many countries outside the US.

If you are talking about her shows in the US, then yes, she is not a good tipper.

Several Food Network TV stars have been interviewed and have said that their TV/restaurant lives and home lives are very different. For instance, someone once said they would never eat at The Lady and Sons (Paula Deen's restaurant) because on her show Paula Deen uses a spoon to taste the food she makes in her home. Those are two totally different situatons and of course she would not do that in the restaurant!

IMO, it is not fair to judge Rachel Ray the person, because of something Rachel Ray host of $40 a day did. As someone said, those shows are at least 5 years old and is staged to come in under $40.

Warning:
I hate Rachel Ray. I hate "yummo". I hate pretty much anything with her name or face stamped on it - or associated with it.
But, in her defense - for the places she was at in Europe / overseas - it just isn't customary to tip - a lot of the time the service is included in those countries and a tip isn't expected.

As a barista, I have had Rachael Ray come into the store several times, as she used to live in the area. Hat on, sunglasses on, abrupt and not very pleasant. I had waited on her a couple of times and had remembered she and her mom liked their iced coffee a certain way, so the next time she was in I just asked if she would like us to add the skim milk and remembered how many pumps of classic syrup. I did not draw attention to her, call her by name or treat her any different than I would have any other customer. She seemed surprised, but didn't react. As my custom, the next person in line got the same attention. One of my regular customers happened to hear them as they left and said that I was a delightful barista, something which my co-workers never let me live down.:sad2:
Another time a new co-worker called her by name and gushed over her and she left in a huff. If you don't want to be recognized, don't go into show business!

Two things to note..
#1. She tipped the coin change left over. (50 cents?)
#2 She was still the Dunkin' Donuts spokesperson at the time, so that may be why the incognito look. (I work at Starbucks) In fact I heard that she would have her assistant get her a Starbucks drink and put it into the DD cup. :rotfl:

One more thing-when she did an episode of $40 here, one of the restaurants on the show that I know some of the staff on said they said they were NOT paid in any way to be on the show, and that they really did tip that badly. In real life she has been known to be much more generous at times.

What Country are you from.. not here in the United States.. :confused3 I see your tag says "Washington".. and that is here  I use to wait tables in a small place to help out a friend of mine when he first opened up.. that was in 1987.. and I was getting 15% then, that was in NY... 24 years ago is many years ago.

In the beginning of her shows the tax and tip were never included in the $40 - then people started to write in and complain (there is a book somewhere that I picked up at a B&N and read that tidbit)

I am also someone who never tipped buffets and 10% was easier than the "!2 or 14% that was the going rate not too long ago - I remember the easy way to figure the tip was to "double the 6% tax rate - up until then we'd leave 10%

The going rate now is 20%.. not even 15.... like I said, I got 15% back in 1987... my DD's both have and are servers.. and they average 20%

I waitressed briefly in the 80's and generally got 10%. That being on top of minimum wage and being at a high priced restaurant gave me about $20 an hour after it was all split out - back when mimimum wage was somewhere in the $3 an hour range.

My friends who waitress now make $40 and up an hour on weekends. Depending on the restaurant it can be spotty on other days - but they all get at LEAST minimum wage and, even with slow times and clean up, it averages out pretty well. Better restaurants pay a higher base rate than minimum here. Paying less is illegal in our state.

The amount she tips on a personal level is just that...personal, so I won't comment on that.

But, she is doing a show that is presenting food to be under $40.00/day. If she has to tip less than the regional norm, or not at all, in order to make this $40.00 budget work, then her whole show is bogus.

These same threads have come up on the Restaurant board, and people are reminded that it's not fair to stiff a server for a tip (unless that server was horrible), in order to make a budget work.

The same principle should apply to Rachel.

I think its great that servers in Washington are getting paid minimum wage.

Here in Florida, servers are not paid close to minimum wage per hour, because the fact that you make tips is figured into your hourly wage.

The only shows I have seen her do she was right here in the USA.

And if TIP is not suppose to be included in the total $40 a day so that the budget works, DON'T say TAX & TIP when you are adding up the meal costs and the daily costs. Every meal she SAYS tax & tip and stated the amount and it is always pennies.

I have seen a lot of things on the internet about what a bad tipper she is and figured it was just other ppl like me noticing that she never tips ppl on her show. If they don't want her to appear to be a crappy tipper then stop saying she is paying a tip, just take that out of the equation and let everyone know that if you are a star it is ok to STIFF the waiter for the tip so long as you keep yourself under budget for the day.

They don't pre-tip the waiters at those places. That would be a scam considering she claims the tip was included in her $40 a day she spent.

Watch next time you see that show at the end of the meal when she claims TAX & TIP. Figure the 7 or 8% tax on that $12 meal and then deduct that from the dollar something she called TAX & TIP and see how many pennies she considers a tip.

And I have never in my lifetime, in the USA ever known a standard tip to be 10%. And I am 42. Not since I have been old enough to go out to eat and have the need to tip. The lowest I ever remember being standard was 15% back in the mid 80's.

Think of it this way...if she is eating out $40 worth of food per day, 20% of that is $8.00. So she should be tipping at least $8.00 per day split among the 3 meals she is buying. She doesn't. She doesn't even tip 3 whole dollars for the three meals she has. Call it what you wanna call it. I call that a HORRIBLE tipper. And especially being on TV she should be more concerned about her image and the whole idea of setting a good example as to how a person should tip in a sit down place.
