Speaking of Clarisonic Mia

I just noticed it in the other thread, and didn't want to hijack that thread, but had a couple questions about the Mia.

My younger dd (9 yrs old) has problems with breakouts on occasion, since she has premature adrenarchy.

Was thinking maybe this would be a good product for her to help her learn how to clean her face a bit more thoroughly than a "normal" 9 yo would need to. Is it gentle enough for a 9 yo to use? Also, what kind of cleanser do you think would be a good one to start with (beyond what it comes with)?

Thanks!

I would say they are as gentle as you want them to be. I have a Clarisonic Pro and love it! I don't push too hard on my face so I find it to be very gentle. I would say if you push really hard while using it it might be more exfoliating than you'd want. It really is gentle overall and with what I'd consider normal use.

Personally, I use Philosophy's Purity Made Simple cleanser, but I'm sure others can speak up as to other more budget-friendly cleansers. I never pay full price, usually about 30% off, but it is still more expensive than others. I find that for me it is worth the extra $$ because it is so gentle, it just melts my makeup off, and I don't have to worry about getting it too close to my eyes. I have used some and they will sting my eyes if I get it too close. When I first started a skin care routine (I was probably 11-12 as I had TERRIBLE acne) my mom took me to the Clinique counter and we purchased some of their acne line.

I hadn't seen this mentioned before until the Budget Board either.. now I am intrigued (thank you budget board for "saving" me more money:rotfl:).

Dd has monthly break outs. Nothing too bad but I am wondering if it might be helpful. I know she'd use it. Are they expensive? Best place to order one?

I wish I had had a Clarisonic when I was younger and my skin was oily and tended to break out. It would have been a big help. :worried:

It's a wonderful product and I highly recommend it. I also use Purity Made Simple, which I've used for over 10 years. It is gentle and cleans thoroughly. The two products work well together.

I purchased my Mia on QVC. It is often featured there with other products as a bonus.

ProActive also offers good products for acne sufferers.

Be careful with Clarisonic. Overuse and pressing too hard can lead to broken capillaries, irritated skin, and with open acne it can spread the bacteria.

DH and I have the Mias for travel, and the regular and PRO models for at home.
I can tell you that pressing too hard will wear away the skin (been there, done that) BUT I used them during radiation treatments, and that helped my face recover from the radiation burns that I ended up with.

So as long as you know how it should be used, and your daughter can use it without pressing on the skin, it will really help to make her skin better.

Good Luck!

I have a clarsonic and love mine but I also bought a gentle brush head for my son with acne and he rarely uses it. It took me taking him to a soap store that made natural products and the man working there had a one on one talk with him about keeping his hands away from his face, using a new wash cloth every day when he washes his face with the soap we bought. He told him to put the bar up on it's end and letting it dry out completely. So in the end that is what worked for him and it cost a whole $5.00 for the bar of soap because we had a ton of wash clothes already.

I wouldn't bother with this unless you a) think she'll be diligent in using it or b)if she's not that you or someone else in the family would be interested in using it (with a different head). By diligent I don't mean using everyday, just that she wouldn't say using it for a week then forget about it.

As far as cleansers, there's stuff from one end of the spectrum to the other, pricewise and strengthwise. Some people have better luck with one product vs another. I work at makeup counters and all day people will say that they love one line but another makes them break out or have reactions. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Someone loves Clinique, someone hates it..Lancome is the only thing they can use but Estee Lauder is the only thing their sister can use. They like Clinique but something from a drug store works better. You get the picture. For her age, I'd recommend starting with stuff you can get at a drug store (Neutragenia or Clarasil, even Cetaphil) and just keep trying til you find something that works.

Clearasil and Clean and Clear works just fine with it if your skin can tolerate it. That is what I use with mine and I have never had a problem.

Thank you for all the replies everyone!

I have a feeling she'd like to use this, because she really does not like having her forehead broken out.

I think I might try her on it, along with the Purity made simple, since a couple of you had recommended that.

I've found a couple sites where I can get it for about $85 shipped, so even if she only uses it on her shower days (3-4/wk), I think it'd be worth it.. try to get her into a habit of cleaning her face, which will help her out in the long run.

I'll just make sure I teach her how to use it properly, and not press too hard.

I should also add that I have the sensitive brush heads, and they are not rough at all. The Clarisonic I bought came from a dermatologist's office and came with the sensitive ones and I never felt like I needed anything stronger so I have stuck with those. Especially for her young skin you might want to make sure you go with the sensitive brush heads.

And Drugstore.com has 20% off all Philosophy products right now (plus 10+% cashback depending on the site you use) so that would be a way to get the Purity cleanser at a discount.

ETA: you mentioned her using it in the shower and that is the perfect time to use it! The steam has opened your pores so it really gets in there and cleans your face!

If she's starting to breakout, it might be time for daily showers and hair washing. Forehead breakouts are sometimes caused by oil from the hair.

Another suggestion is to try the drugstore versions of the Mia for $15 - $20 just to see if your DD would like it and would use it.

Purity Made Simple works very well by itself. Very gentle, no fragrance, removes eye makeup very easily. I used it for many years w/o the Mia. I have tried many other brands in the past, but always returned to it. Now it is a staple in my regimen.

I totally agree! I used it for years by itself before buying my Clarisonic. I really got my Clarisonic to help with exfoliation and getting rid of dead skin.

Some other cleansers that I like are Exuviance Purifying Gel Cleanser and Murad Resurgence Cleanser (great for mature skin). Both can be bought at Ulta. I have hormonal acne prone skin and I also use prescription Benzaclin or Duac during the day and Epiduo at night.

Well here's a question...OP is what your daughter gets just occasional breakouts or full blown acne? If it's just nasty breakouts, she might find acne products too harsh or drying.

It's just an occasional breakout, usually on her forehead.. so I'm definitely not planning on using any acne products with her.

Was hoping for just something that would make washing her face a little easier (more fun?) for her, so that the breakouts wouldn't happen. Right now, she only gets mild ones every couple wks or so. But I just foresee them happening more and more as she gets older, so hoping to get her into a good face-washing habit now.

If I had to guess, and I don't say this to be a jerk is that at her age and into the future, she'll probably still get them no matter what she does. Just comes with the territory you know? But I agree that getting her into the habit of taking care of her skin now will help.

Yes! use the mia or mia 2 (has two speeds) with a gentle facewash - like cetaphil! it has a timer so that would be perfect!!
