I want to get DD13 some kind of speakers so she can listen to her ipod thru them. She has a nano. I'd also like it to charge while it's plugged into the speakers. This would be set up in her room and not near a computer.

Can anyone recommend what I shoudl be looking for? I'd like to spend around $100 for this.

I've seen some I-home products but they all look to be either portable(which isn't really necessary) or clock radios and stuff like that. I really just want speakers that also recharge the ipod.

Thanks!

I bought my 2 DDs the JBL speakers from Costco last Christmas and they were $99. The same thing was about $149 in the Apple Store. They really sound great and also charge at the same time. BJs also had them for the same price at that time. Not sure if they have them right now. It's a good size too. . . easy to take from place to place! :thumbsup2

My dad got me an iHome for about $20 at a sale in Circuit City. Mine was an older version and didn't come with a docking extension for the nano. I'm not sure if they even do now though. I like it, but I rarely use it for my nano. It's small and great for a clock/radio too. Problem is finding a good outlet for it. The plug is enormous!

I recently purchased a IM7 by Altec Landsing for my IPOD. I love the sound quality. I do know that Altec Lansing has two units that are portable speaker systems that run about $99.00 each. I believe the units are called IMN and IM4. You may want to check at places like Best Buy, American, Circuit City etc. They do run these on special every so often. Otherwise always try ebay. Altec Lansing IMPLUS has been selling on ebay for approx. $60.00. This unit retails for approx. $149.99. This is a nice unit as well which comes with two speakers.

I got these for my mom for her birthday; she uses them with her nano and loves them. The sound quality's surprisingly good and it charges the iPod pretty quickly. It also can run on a/c or battery power, which is nice.

I have a JBL On The Go speaker too and it is AMAZING! Tiny and portable and perfect :) Sound is fantastic.

I have a Bose Sounddock and I love it! It charges my iPod, too. The sound is amazing.

However, it was a gift so I don't know how much it was but I want to say it was around $299.00.

Just don't be fooled into thinking the speakers have to advertised to be for ipods. Anything that is designed to accept the small headphone connector will work, including most speakers sold for or with computers.

I have no less than 4 (yes, four!) of the JBL On Stage speaker units. They are small, yet the sound quality is excellent. I never even use my charger anymore. I just leave it in docked in the speaker system for charging.

OK, a couple of questions on this JBL thing

1)What's the difference between the JBL On Stage, JBL On stage B, and JBL on stage II products?
2)Does this product need to be connected to a computer to function? We're planning on her using it in a room that does not have a computer.
3)What else can you tell me about it?

The Bose Soundock is a fantastic product, but pricey at $299.00

I know you said you don't need portability, but for a bit more, $150.00, you can get the Logitech portable speaker - great sound quality, charges the Ipod, and optionally runs on batteries.

I have the Soundock in my bedroom, but also bought the Logitech strictly because of the battery issue. I can take it to the beach, on the boat, etc. and it sounds great! Apple now makes a product similar to the Bose Soundock that has battery capability. But, it's even heavier than the Soundock and not what I'd consider truly portable for those types of situations I mentioned above.

A teenager might really enjoy the portability of a speaker system that runs on AC as well as batteries.

None of them need to be connected to a computer to play the Ipod.

As for the differences, check on the Best Buy or Circuit City websites - they list the product specs.

Well, it looks like I'm going to get the JBL On Stage II with remote speakers.

Any additional opinions or input?

we just have ours hooked up to basic computer speakers we got on sale for $4.50 lol and they work great

The difference between the OnStage and the OnStage II is that the II has a remote control. I think this is the best sounding system aside from the much higher end (and more expensive) Bose and HiFi systems. (I listen to them all as I work at a certain fruit store part time.) I bought one for my step-dad last Christmas, in fact.

As someone already said, none of these need to use a computer - just plug the ipod in and the speaker acts like a big set of headphones.

And while it's true you don't need specific "ipod speakers" to use speakers with your ipod, you DO need an ipod-compatible docking system in order to charge the ipod with a set of speakers. If you just plug in external speakers, you can listen to it, but you'll need another way to charge the ipod. You can get a wall adapter that plugs into the USB cable that comes with the ipod (the one that normally goes to the computer) - this allows you to charge it anywhere you have wall power, without a computer. You could use that in conjunction with generic speakers and get both power and sound, but a docking system is easier.

Thanks for the input! I appreciate it.
