Hi all,
Wondering if I am allowed to pack sparklers in my check in baggage? I figured they would be fun for the kids at night. I called Westjet and they said it is up to US customs. Any thoughts?
These are those long items which you light with a match and they sparkle - you can put them on a cake...
Thanks!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say no. The sparklers are probably considered a type of pyrotechnic. Personally, I wouldn't even handle a sparkler before I went on a plane in case they decide to swab my bags and put it into the sniffer machine.

By the way, depending on how old your kids are, I don't really consider sparklers something that kids should be playing with. I work in the fire business and I just don't consider those things toys.

Found this on a website:

To help consumers use fireworks more safely, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers these recommendations:

Do not allow young children to play with fireworks under any circumstances. Sparklers, considered by many the ideal "safe" firework for the young, burn at very high temperatures and can easily ignite clothing. Children cannot understand the danger involved and cannot act appropriately in case of emergency.

Older children should only be permitted to use fireworks under close adult supervision. Do not allow any running or horseplay..

I think I'd rather see your kids playing with those expensive twirly light things they sell all over the parks. :) They'll last longer too.

We like the glow braclets. The kids put them around their wrists or ankles or put multiple ones together to make a necklace. Makes for some funny low light pictures.

I suggest you do NOT try to get them on a plane. Mail them to your destination instead.

I'm not sure even that would work... the post office may not handle them either.
