Spanish becoming dominant language in Miami

There is no problem whatsoever with someone trying to maintain their mother language. however, when they go to other places, especially to live there, I personally think they should respect the national language and learn it - even if it is the basics. I learning in civics last year that, at one point, it was mandatory for immigrants to learn English. I'm not sure if the standards are more leanient or even lacking, though.

This topic seriously bothers me. If you're in America you should know how to speak English. You can speak your native language, sure. But please; it isn't fair to an American who speaks English to struggle to assist someone who doesn't (and should because they live in America; they should be expected to speak english) :\

this sorta bothers me..
i can see immigrants speaking their language to 'stay true' to their culture. and stuff like that.
altho i also think it would be best for them (immigrants) if they learn the nation's national language.
and maybe they truly cannot learn the language.. like they cannot pay for lessons.. or something along those lines.

Try living here.
It get's really annoying, (NO OFFENSE) but I got a booklet (cant remember where at) and it was in spanish. :headache:

If I moved somewhere Id have a huuuuggggeeee problem learning and entire new language.

I personally don't mind people who come here and don't know english well.
If they've been here a while, then they should know enough of it to converse.

But seriously, there are so many asian immigrants where I live, and I don't expect them to know English real well.

But then again, we don't seem to have as many immigrant problems here.

Go Spanish!!!!

I just think that there's just many Spanish people around that area...it's not lie we are going to dominate FLORIDA!:lmao: Come on , we're not that powerfull!

Yeah. 100% agreed.
If we would go to their country they would expect us to learn their language.

Ouch.

But now we have to learn their language in our country. There is something wrong with that.

I usually yell at people who dont speak English to me. I know it might seem a little rude but how do you feel when people are talking a different language and you have no clue what they are saying.

when we were in disney at philarmagic there was a lady behind us speaking (loudly) on the phone ( ) during the entire show. my father asked her several times to stop and at the end of the show she said something about not speaking english, when my father then responded to her in spanish (the look on her face!!) she was shocked and resorted to english. then as she was walking away she said (under her breath) el stupido. this got my dad and he started yelling in english and spanish at the same time... good times, i dont really mind it, but you should at least know some of the language.::cop:

Well, I live in a Spanish speaking country, and in private schools it is required to learn English so don't complain about learning other languages. They start teaching you in pre-pre.

I kind of like that! My first language is supposed to be spanish, but now I feel like it is english! I talk more in english than spanish. In spanich class, when we are reading books(novels in spanish) they tell me I speak " like a gringa!" I got points taken off an oral presentation jst for that!

They are not Spanish, they are Latin. If you are Spanish, you are from Spain and Spain only.
You are in another country, so you don't know what the immigration problem is like.

It pisses me off that people can't speak English when they are in America. Vacation? Fine. Live here? Not fine.
I should not have to accomodate you (by speaking Spanish) because you're too damn lazy. ( to learn English)
It's ridiculous to see all the Spanish signs around and hear people say 'No speekkeee iiingliiish'. Well then make a freaking effort to fit in.
Sorry, it just really makes my blood boil that MY FAMILY had to make an effort to be someone in this country, yet these people are getting off scot-free.

Well, maybe it;s because most of those people are too old to learn a new language. As you get older, the dumber you are. What I meant was spanish-speaking people.

What's the problem? It's not like you';re ever going to see them again in your life?!
Gosh, so that's why when I go on vacation, and start speaking spanish at the malls, you americans tart looking at me funny, so I start speaking your languge-english with my sister and I ACTUALLY LIKE IT!
Just let those people be!

As you get older it's harder to learn other languages.
But if you are going to visit or move to a country who's main language you do not know, you should make an effort to learn it.

No offense at ALL. I'm happy that those who speak spanish want to speak it to preserve their culture, but when your out in public at restaurants and stores I think you should know some english to speak. :confused3

:thumbsup2 When we are at vacation in California and my parents start speaking spanish really loud, it's really embarassing. I mean, why not just put a sign on my forehead that says, " Hi,I'm a tourist! Lookat us everyone!" I'm 13 so I'm in one of those "difficult ages":rotfl2: I speak ENGLISH with my sister in the mall and at disneyland. Sometimes when we get tired, we speak spanish, but mostly english.
