Space Mountain

I have a 6'2" friend who put his hands up on a mine train ride at Cedar Point several years ago and he smacked his hands on an overhead wood beam. Fortunately it was just a lot of pain and no serious injury.

There are so many rumors about the parks, this person was killed here, that person was hurt there. Disney is not going to put the tracks so low that you would get hurt on it. Now if you're doing something stupid like hanging off the side with your hands under the car you might loose it, but otherwise Disney does everything it possibly can to avoid injury. I saw a show about the parks on the travel channel and they were talking about all of the safety precautions that the TOT has, there are 7 back up systems in case something goes wrong. They were talking about all of the safety Disney puts into it's rides. They don't want people to get hurt, they care for the well being of the guest. It's bad publicity, and they want you to come back in one peice. 31 years of being open and millions of guest later they have a pretty terrific track record.

I COMPLETELY understand the fear, though. Sometimes no matter how much you tell yourself that logically it won't happen, you still yank your hands back into the ride while going under all of those beams!

And that's the fun of roller coasters, i.e. the perceived danger factor. If it was actually dangerous, they'd be shut down in an instant. The feeling of flying off the tracks, the sensation that you're going to hit the wall or a beam, the ups and down in the dark, etc. creates the thrill that we all love. I'd guess that well over a couple million people ride SM a year, many of them at the extreme end of the spectrum in terms of height, and I'm sure it's designed with sufficient room to spare for even the super tall. FWIW, in college one of my best friends was 7'1" and he rode it multiple times with no issues.

I also question the story that somebody was able to actually stand up in SM. If it happened, it seems like it would be an extremely well known event and while I don't know that much about accidents at WDW, some of the experts on this board would have chimed in with a confirmation.

This reminds me of the Weird Al song "A Complicated Song".

What kind of moron stands up during a roller coaster ride?
