Hey everyone! I'm leaving very soon for my trip, and I wanted to ask you a question from my terrified sister lol. I have ridden Space Mountain before when i was young, but I forget most of it. Are there a lot of drops or is it tame compared to other coasters in Disney? Also, someone told me that there are two different lines-one for an easier ride and one for a more intense ride. I don't recall this, but if anyone can let me know, it would be greatly appreciated!! :thumbsup2

Space Mt. doesn't have a lot of drops, just 1 significant one, but it's not bad. It's all in the dark and its the unexpected turns that makes this a thrill ride. You can't really make out the track infront of you, so the sharp turns really get you. It only travels about 20-30 mph tops.

There are two different lines, but the tracks are supposedly the same. But I found the right side to be more intense, and the left is not as bad. My brother, who lived down there for a while, rode it with a friend many times right before one of the many hurricanes hit down there. And he found the same thing.

If your sister decides to ride it, but is still a little nervous, I'd make sure she isn't in the very front seat or in the very back. Those are the most intense seats on the ride. The front seat, you can't brace yourself enough before you go around the turns. And in the back seat, you get whipped around the corners very quickly.

Have fun, Space Mt. is one of my favorite rides at WDW!

Thanks JulieLovesDisney!! The information was very useful! My sister is also very grateful too! Thanks for the well wishes and I hope you have a fun trip as well! :wizard:

O.K. I too have been on SM as a kid but will not go on it anymore. However I have been on Splash Mountain. SO my question is...............How bad is the one big drop on Space Mountain compared to Splash Mountain??? :confused3

Well, they're actually opposite tracks, so all of the turns would be different, so not exactly the same

I would say that the drop on SplashM is more intense and steeper than SpaceM

The space mountain drop is a lot smaller than the splash drop. I found a good thing to tell people who are not to sure about going on space is that it doesnt even reach 30 miles an hour.

There's a good chance my thoughts aren't going to help you at all and I apologize for that :)

I rode Space Mountain knowing I didn't like coasters of any kind. I don't like drops, fast turns, dips, you name it. I thought I could handle Space Mountain though because I couldn't *see* where I was going. WRONG!!! I am a 23 year old woman and I cried through the whole thing I was so terrified!!! :guilty:

BUT I didn't fall over and die like I thought I was going to. lol

Soooooo...will I ever go on it again? No! Would I suggest someone unsure of coasters going on it just in case they like it ok? Yes! Because guess what...you won't die of fear!

Sandy :)

One thing to keep in mind. The splash mountain drop may be larger, but it is also smoother. Space mountain is very jaring, you get bounced around quite a bit. My 70 year old mom can do splash mountain. NO WAY could she do Space mountain. I think she would be seriously injured.

I never rode a coaster until I was 40. My kids told me BTM was "Just a train ride." They were right. Then they took me to Space Mountain and said it's no worse than the train ride. They were right again. Last week we went on Everest........"It's just a train ride".............................

I love coasters. I love speed, drops, sharp turns in the dark, etc. That being said, I won't ride Space Mountain again until they update it. It's ROUGH. I felt positively abused when I got off that thing.

One thing I have found about Space Mountain ... is that it is in the dark so it is all a bit unexpected..... UNLESS you sit up front. This way you can anticipate what is about to happen and makes it easier if you have concerns - just a tip.

I could hug you for posting a Space Mountain thread! :grouphug: :teeth:

I'm having a really crummy day, and Space, well, it's like my favorite WDW thing to think about and I'm actually smiling now! :)

It's a pretty rough coaster, but tame as far as drops are concerned. It has some sharp curves, so hang on!

But, by far, the VERY best part of Space, for me, is the light tunnel. God, I wish I was in that tunnel right now!!!! :goodvibes

There is only one significant drop and it's more of a mogul type get you some airtime drop than a steep speed drop.

Space Mountain is one of the best rides in MK. I myself do not typically like roller coasters, but whats great about it is that its all in the dark so you can't see what's going on. There's a drop, yes, but not as bad as Splash Mountain by any means. The only thing people complain about is the roughness of the ride- it jerks you around a bit. And yes, the right line is more intense than the left- but that's the whole point isn't it? Here's a tip- sitting in the front gives you a smoother ride. Also, make sure you keep your arms inside the vehicle- I've heard that in some places the tracks are really close together. Keep your eyes open for the light tunnel.

Space Mountain is essentially a Wild Mouse, in that it is self contained (the tracks go stay pretty much confined and go through the ride structure), the turns are fast and more or less flat, and the hills aren't intensly tall, but they are desinged to give you a negative-g sensation (you come out of your seat a bit). It is by no means an intense roller coaster, none at Disney are except for RNR. The darkness adds to the excitement, but it's not a bad ride at all. Remember, it was designed for kids.

I'm one of those people that likes to keep their hands up all through a coaster, and i've never been able to do it on Space Mountain because i'm scared of this very thing. Are the tracks really close enough that you can hit then when you are going underneath them? Some of them look really close, but I have a hard time thinking that someone could touch them if they had their hands up because i'm sure that would really hurt... Anyone know about this for sure?
