My 6 year old really wants to ride Space Mountain, but I will only let him ride it if I can physically ride it with him too. (Holding on to him--like a bear hug, same seat, etc.) Is this possible? I can't remember if everyone must ride in an individual seat or if it is possible for 2 people to double up in one seat. Anyone?

I don't know about now but I have a vivid memory of riding the SM ride with my aunt back in 1984 and I was sitting in her lap between her legs...it was my first time and when we got off the ride she had claw marks on her thighs from where my fingernails had dug into her b/c I was scared to death. I still love this ride to this day...but you may want to make sure your child doesn't hold onto your legs with their nails...:thumbsup2 ...if they let you ride that way anymore.

^ next to you i think works out :)

SM in Florida is single seat riding. I am told that the person behind can reach and hold the shoulders of the person in front, but I don't know this for sure. It is one of the reasons we have waited to let DS7 on. We got to go on the one at Tokyo Disneyland, and it's a two seat configuration (like DL. and DLP) Now that DS knows what the ride is like, I would be happier letting him go on the one at WDW. Not that I had an safety issues in mind so much, just DS sometimes finds rides so noisy he gets a little spooked. He really enjoyed SM at TDL.

SM at WDW everyone sits in a single row, three to a car. I was able to hold onto my nephew's shoulders when I sat behind him (it was a stretch, but I am short). This is the photo they have on allears.

The WDW Space Mountain is single seat.

Wesignlanguage is also correct that the seats used to be different than they are now.

SM seats are three singles. My BIL reached over and kept his hand on my nephew's head the first time he rode. I wouldn't worry too much. I think he was only 5 at the time and not very big for his age. There is an adjustable lap bar and there really aren't any big drops...more turns than anything else. I would give it a try.

Yeah I remember those old seats. Dad got in first, then I sat in front of him, in between his legs. I assume there was a safety bar or something, but I can't imagine how that was safe.

He will be fine. Just put him in the middle seat and hold onto his shoulders from behind. That way he will feel your hands and feel more secure. The safety harnesses will keep him in.

If he meets the height requirement, your really have nothing to worry about. If you are comfortable doing so, just ride behind him. The distance between the two of you is minimal. Enjoy your ride!

The first time we rode it my son who was 4 at the time sat in the middle seat and my wife sat behind with her hands on his shoulders. I sat in the seat in front of him and turned around and I had my hands on his legs. This was the first time I rode Space Mtn, turned backwards the entire way. We thought it was a 2 person per seat ride until we got there.

My 5-yr-old rode it last Sept with no problems - loved it, rode in the front seat several times. Your son will be fine even if you are not physically holding onto him.

Sorry, the forums linked me to this necro thread. Apologies for bumping it. I didn't realize the links at the bottom could be so old.

It's one seat in Disney world. I rode it in 2014 and sat behind my girlfriend. Held on to her shoulders the whole time cause it scares the crap out of me.

I can do every other coaster in Disney no problem but this one just.... sigh
