Disney has announced that WDW's Space Mountain will close on Sunday April 19 (one week after Easter) for major rehab and is expected to reopen in "late 2009". No other information was provided.

FINALLY! Hey at least the rumor came true!

glad i got to get one last ride on the old, rickety, jerky version of space mountain. i will miss you. R.I.P.

I am hearing this should be 10 months, maybe even a year... Late 2009 is open ended and not official by any means...

Any indication of what actually is going to be done? It's a considerably shorter period of time than the rehab at Disneyland took so maybe it isn't a complete track replacement? I certainly hope it is.

How are the cars at DisneyLand? I've never been there so... are they wider or anything, sit more people? I guess they would make about the same changes to the wdw Space Mountain.

At DL it was a sudden and unexpected closing due to safety reasons. For this one they have had time to plan, decide what is to be done, set up contracts, order stuff, and other things to get ready. A lot of the down time at DL was due to having to do all the preparatory stages while the attraction was down. Here there has been time to get ready.

The cars at DL are side by side seating for two people per row. Also, and very important for people with disabilities, there is a special load/unload area where you really do not have time constraints similar to the special area at TSMM.

I don't think anyone knows yet... Well, of course WDI knows.. But, I mean people online.. I read a lot of speculation.. that's all...

Hey, I'll take one for the team lol... we're going in late April and it won't be open, but hey, it's for the better. Darned thing was hardly ever operating when I was there in September!

I still have my doubts that this will be a complete and total overhaul of the ride mechanism. Yes, they have learned their lesson from the DL SM redux, but 7+ months? That's terribly optimistic, even for Disney. As a PP mentioned, "late-2009" is open-ended and they could push it back, but you know they're gunning for the holidays, so if it's not up by the second week of December 2009, they'll extend it through the following spring.

Even if they had already ordered a new track, side-by-side cars, etc. I don't believe the timeframe is generous enough to tear apart the old ride and install the new. I think the last rumor floating around was the closest to reality: Same ride/track layout but with new rails (possibly smoother); a sound system to play music during the journey; a new entrance/queue configuration and new departure/moving sidewalk dioramas; and new visuals on the interior of the dome. That sounds about right for 7+ months.

I guess we'll have to wait until somebody snaps shots of them taking old stuff out and/or bringing new stuff in.... from the Contemporary, maybe?

I'm going next week with two first time WDW travelers. I was worried they wouldn't get to ride space mountain. Glad to see we can.

on the disney website it also says that the tommrowland transit authoriy is closed for a refurb too

It can happen easily. If Disney did most of the ordering pre-clousure. I've seen intiman rocket coasters go up in 5 months and open in 6 months. Space Mountian refurb is something tamer than an Intiman Rocket. Unless we're getting the Paris Like Version from Vekoma I believe. It could be done easily if smart.

I just got back from my first trip to DL and LOVED Space Mountain there! I hope they do the same thing at WDW.

They probably closed Transit Authority because they don't want anyone to see the construction

Yes but those installations were all done on a bare site. Here there's a lot of demolition they will need to be done first and this the problem with working in the building which will cause a lot of access problems for cranes and other construction equipment.

Space Mountain closing, Wed Way People Mover closing, that oughta beef up the crowds at Carousel of Progress some.

And it's going to take 7 months or more to do all this?
