I really want my DD to be able to go on space mountain. She would absolutely love it. The thing is that she really cannot be in a seat all by herself. On other roller coasters, I need to put my arm across her chest or around her to keep her stable. I have ridden space mountain tons of times. It is definitely tame enough for her but the single seats. . . I just can't take the chance. Does anyone know if they have any seats that accommodate two people or if she can sit on my lap? Probably not. But I thought I would ask. It is the one ride I am dying for her to experience.

For safety reasons, she can only ride as a "single." She cannot sit on your lap and there are not any "two person" cars at Space.

Dang. I thought that was the answer but something someone said made me think maybe there was a special car I had just never seen.

Back when Space Mountain first opened, this would have been possible, as there weren't really single seats...two people sat together, one behind the other, with no "back" between them. But once they went to single seats, it was no longer possible.

I'm positive it won't work at WDW, but doesn't Space Mountain at DL have 2 people sitting next to one another? I could be wrong because I haven't been to DL yet, but I thought I had read that.

Of course, that doesn't help since it seems your plan is for WDW and not DL.

DLR's Space Mt is far superior in my mind to WDW: Side-by-side seating, smoother track, darker, and great music.

Space Mountain at WDW is all single seats; they won't let you ride together. If you go to Disneyland, Space Mountain there has side-by-side seats. They also are much easier to get into and let you take your time doing so.

No way! We are going to Disneyland, not WDW! I guess I have never ridden it there. I could have sworn I had but now that I think about it, I think it has either been closed or we skipped it thinking it was single seats. You all have no idea how excited I am!

It used to have those seats with two people sitting on one bench, one in front of the other. But in the refurb a few years ago, the track was updated, the ride vehicles changed and they added music.

what i did for my son first time was sat him in the middle seat, and I sat behind him and was able to put my arms up and over and hold onto his shoulders.

She will be able to feel the pressure of your hands as you hold onto her throughout the ride.

This is what the ride vehicle looks like at Disneyland:

the bolded is why we have not ridden with our youngest daughter.
She can stay stable in an attraction like Test Track with just is beside her. We don't need to put our arms across or around her to keep her stable.
But, there is no way she would have enough stability to stay sitting in the correct position without someone sitting right next to her.

And, the type of restraint would do little to actually keep her in place.

Because of what the OP wrote about her child's needs, that doesn't sound like it would work.
It also depends on the size of the child and the parent's reach. When I rode Space Mountain first with my oldest (non-disabled) daughter when she was 6, I could not reach over the seat to touch any part of her - and I am tall, with long arms.

So it is single seats now at Disneyland?
Space Mountain at Disneyland IS side by side seating.

The Matterhorn used to have two people sitting in the same seat, but is now single seating and the matterhorn has the same track layout as Space Mountain at Disney World, I think that's where the confusion came in.

But again, for Space Mountain, it definitely is side by side seating. It should also be noted that each seat has their own speakers for music that plays throughout the ride, just in case that is an issue for your daughter.

Additionally, they load in a separate area, which allows you as much time to load and unload as you need. As Sue said, it may or may not work for you. The nice part is because it loads and unloads in a separate area, you can check before they put the vehicle onto the track, just let the cast member know that you may need to get off if you feel it won't be ok for your daughter. They are usually very accommodating to such situations.

I think I will have hubby or I try the ride without her first. I can't believe I have no been on it in Disneyland but I guess I haven't. I know she would be fine in DW if it were double seats. I have ridden it a ton of times and been inside when it has broken down and they have turned on the lights. It is really not much more than a kiddy roller coaster in DW. The effects just make it feel like it has huge drops. I am just not comfortable it is otherwise the same in DL in the ways that would matter to her safety. My DD is not stable side to side (not horribly unstable but she can't sit safely on a kitchen chair with no arms) and she tends to slide down in seats. She has done test track at epcot with no problems and splash mountain. She doesn't have great vision so she really likes thrill rides that go fast and have big drops.
