So I read in I think the Unofficial Guide that Space mountain would be closed until 2010. Is this true? I am going in January and this is my favorite ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this a perpetual rumor with nothing substantial as of yet.

I have also heard rumors of it closing in January and not opening again until 2010... I hope the rumors are true! The ride really does need to be revamped!
I love the ride but half of my family will not go on the ride anymore because they are certain it will eventually come off the tracks lol...
I dont think that is true but I do think they need to update the ride for several reasons... It seems like every trip we have been on that the ride is closed down for several hours. I understand technical problems but every time we are there?

I was just down there and a CM said (please take this with a grain of salt) that while nothing has been officially announced as of yet, the plan is to close down space mountain sometime in early 2009 for a complete overhaul and that once it's closed down it will be closed for approximately 12-18 months. It is still a rumor as Disney has not made an announcement as of yet.

My husband actually read something yesterday on the web that it is slated to be closed in 2009 for a major overhaul.

If they make it anywhere close to Space Mountain in DL - it will be worth every millisecond that it's closed.

Trust me guys!

We just decided to go back to DL in 2 weeks to celebrate my birthday. When my DH asked what I wanted to do while we are there.....first on the list is SPACE MOUNTAIN.

Trust me folks.......it's worth the wait!

That's what I've heard too. DS was a CM at DL when they were testing SM before it reopened and he said it was now MUCH better than in WDW. And he'd loved it in WDW.

I am soooo looking forward to riding it for the 1st time EVER this October. (Only 38 days left!!! ) If it closes after, I will just HAVE TO go back to try it again!:rotfl2:

What are the differences between SM at DL and SM at WDW? It sounds like a refurbishment would be just the thing!

This is going to sound harsh, but the SM at DL is so much better than the WDW one. I was at WDW in May, and got free airfare in hotel out of nowhere for DL in August. The difference was shocking. Its just a lot better at DL. Its actually near complete darkness except for the stars and they've done something to the supports so you dont see the track and struts, thats really cool as its more surprising. The ride is also faster and smoother. You sit side by side too, which is nice I think as two people can ride up front, each car holds more people too.

Its just a lot better. Its not a slight difference like the difference between the two SMs, its pronounced and I hope they close SM and do this. Im always sad when something is closed I like but in the end when Im actually there I hardly care, theres so much else.

because... space mountain is closer to the matterhorn than it is to disneyland's space mountain.

you're comparing apples to pineapples. they're similar in name and theme. that's it.

and DLR's was just recently rebuilt from scratch and had all of its effects improved on.

but you can't ride the TTA through theirs.

That really does sound exciting! My DD loves to ride BTMRR with me, but she won't ride SM because she is afraid of riding alone. She would ride it in a heartbeat if we could ride side by side.:)

Anyway you slice it, I'll be sure to ride it when we're there next month. I was thinking about maybe skipping it, but will need to be sure to ride it. We don't go as often as some of the people here at the Dis and it could be 2 years before we go back the next time. I'll look forward to it being redone in the meantime (if it actually happens)! :wizard:

I'm agreeing that SM is in need of a refurb!

I rode it in April for the 1st time and I was very disappointed with it, the ride was jerky and I totally didn't feel safe in the carriage. I'm not sure what I was expecting from such an old ride, but it certainly wasn't that. I am glad that I did try it now though if it is having a change, that means when I return the new one will hopefully be open for me to give it a go :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 I soooo hope they refurb too! When I rode it in Feb I seriously felt my back crack at least twice from it being so jerky! I also felt really unsafe as it is soooo loud and the tracks just seem really old.

I guess I'm one of the only ones to not want it re-furbed? I've not been a Disney fan for that many years, but it's kind of nice to have an attraction that is 'classic' and not be updated. In my 6-7 years of being a Disney fan, they've changed quite a few rides just as I was getting used to them.

Some refurbs were good, others not at all. I'm still mad about the wand at Epcot, so take that for what it's worth, lol.

Hey Boxer,
If it is anything like the DLR refurb, it will be pretty much the exact same ride, exactly as you remember it. It just fixes the ride technology so it won't be so rough.

It was definitely worth it at DLR! Rides so smooth! I didn't think the queue rework was very good--seemed like an opportunity to spice it up, but they didn't. But the ride itself was great.

Last time I was at WDW, last year, I only rode Space Mountain once because I came off with my back twinging badly from the roughness. And I love Space Mountain! Made me sad. So I hope that the refurb is a reality, and I will get to ride it many times in a trip like I like to!
