I would like to take a small canvas backpack as a personal item on our Southwest flight. Will this be okay? I've read their policy and they don't list a small backpack as an example of a personal item. Does anyone have experience with this?

If you mean one that's the size of what kids/teens use for book bags these days, it will be fine. If you mnea larger that that, you will probably be forced to gate check it (unless it's your only carryon.)

I have brought a standard size backpack as well as a rather large purse onto multiple flights with no problem.

Each of us always carry on a regular size backpack along with a 22-inch wheeled suitcase. There has never been any problem. As long what you carry on will fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment, you will be fine.

Same here. My normal sized backpack fits under the seat and it has always been allowed as a personal item.
