Southwest newbie

Can someone explain the ABC Boarding Pass system to me? We are flying Southwest for the first time next month. Me, DH and 6yr old DS. Will one of us be able to sit with him? :

Just get there early and get either an A or B pass and you should be fine. It is highly unlikely that your child will have to sit alone.
