I haven't flown SW in a long time, so I'm not exactly sure how this works. I understand it's best to check in at least 24 hours before your flight, but what if you have a layover? Do you need to check in for that too, or are you automatically checked in? If we opt for Early Bird Check In, does it cover the connecting flight also?

You would check in at EXACTLY 24 hours, not earlier if you do it yourself. Earlybird checks in for you at 36 hours I believe.

Which ever way you check in it covers all segments of your flight that day.

The EBCI is at the 36 hour mark but you are not able to do this it is automatically done by SWA computer system.

When you check in for your first flight at the 24 hour mark, or when you use EBCI, you are also checked in for your second flight.
