I never done Southwest's online check-in before, does it ask you how many bags you are bringing (check through and/or carry-on)?

I don't believe it does. but, you are allowed two checked bags, which you will check when you get there, and a carryon bag and a purse for on the plane.

All you are asked with online checkin is your confirmation number and name on the reservation.

So I can only have two pieces of luggage????

I'm new to this. Please help before I get to the airport with too many bags and I have to leave something at the airport.

from the southwest website

http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/baggage.html

Baggage Allowance: For each ticketed Customer, Southwest allows three (3) checked pieces with size limitations for each individual piece.

Excess Baggage: Excess baggage will be charged at the rate of $50.00 for the first (1st) through the ninth (9th) extra bag and $110.00 for each piece checked thereafter.

Weight and Size Allowance: Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage. Effective March 1, 2005, overweight items from 51 to 70 pounds will be accepted for a charge of $25.00 per item. Items weighing from 71 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches (i.e., surfboards, bicycles, vaulting poles) will be accepted for a charge of $50.00 per item. Any item weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However, Customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a Known Shipper as defined by the FAA or FAA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). For all Cargo inquires please call the Cargo Sales and Service Center at 1-800-533-1222.

Thank You. I have just put a reminder on my calendar for the week before I fly in February to check all of this information again.

I learned something this past trip...take advantage of your bag allowance! We usually prefer to travel with the least amount of stuff as possible so we usually pack 2 large suitcases for 4 of us plus our carryons. Everything fits is fine and the cases aren't stuffed but both directions 1 bag was over the weight limit and we had to open our cases and transfer stuff from 1 case to the other..in fact, we saw quite a few people doing this.

Thanks for the correction. I knew somebody was allowing 3 but couldn't remember who it was!!!

That 3-bag allowance really comes in handy with all the restrictions on liquids, gels, etc. (3-oz. bottles just don't cover enough days of our trip)! :thumbsup2
Another reason I  SWA!

Just got done checking in and no mention of bags.

There is no mention of bags, because you have to check them at either the counter, self service kiosk or skycap when you get to the airport. They must be weighed and tagged.
The allowance is listed on the website and was quoted by lawgs.
