Southwest CC 50,000 point question

I was just approved for the Southwest Premier card, and the Southwest Plus card. I was wondering.... for one of the cards I plan to spend the $2,000 needed immediately. How long will it take the 50,000 points to post? Does it happen right away (or shortly after), or do they wait until the end of the 3 months that you have to spend the money/earn the reward?

Also....Just thought of this one...Do the points automatically just go to my rapid rewards account? Or do I have to do something special to get them there? I did give my rr# when signing up for each account.

Thanks!

If you gave your rapid rewards number, they should just show up there. Your points will post within a day or 2 of the closing of the billing cycle in which your $2000 spending posts. For mine: I applied in flight on 1/21, I received my card on 1/27, my statement closed 2/4, and my points were in my RR account on 2/5.

Excellent! Thank you so much!

The bonus points may be delayed until the next month if the qualifying purchase is made in the past few days of the billing period.

If you want them right away, don't wait for your bill. Just go online and pay it.

This is definitely my plan! I'm still waiting to get my card in the mail...but as soon as I do, I plan to make the purchase and then Go pay it off. Although....do you have to pay off the card before the points post? Or just charge the $2,000?

Doesn't matter to me bc I plan to pay it right away...but just curious.

Paying the bill is not a requirement for the points to post. The points will post two or three days after your statement closes. Your payment has no impact.

That happened to me. I had to wait an extra month. As soon as the next month statement closed, they were in my account.

Another question!! I just got both cards in the mail today (yay!!). Neither mentions the 50,000 point bonus. Is that normal? Should I be worried, or since I applied with those offers should I NOT worry? Not sure if its customary for any of the paperwork with the cards to mention it or not.

In the 6 Southwest cards we have gotten, none have had any mention of the offer in the paperwork, and the points have always shown up :-)

What is the difference between these two cards? I just got the email offer for the Premier with 50k points and 100$ statement credit (offsetting annual fee) - are there other options for that many points?

The Premier with a $100 statement credit offer is pretty rare; if you're considering applying, I'd go for it now.

The differences between the two Personal Plus and Premier are relatively minor. I was about to list them out, but this link is the most convenient way to see the comparison: https://www.southwest.com/html/rapi...hwest-airlines-rapid-rewards-cards/index.html

The 50,000 point sign-up bonus is typically available for all three cards: Personal Premier, Personal Plus, and Business Premier.

Most people will get both at the same time so they can get a Companion Pass. The Companion Pass is 110,000 points and those cards will knock out 100,000 of the requirement.

Why do people go for the companion pass? Not sure what I am missing but it looks like I could get a R/T ticket for less than 25k points...what's the benefit of the companion pass?

I think you're confused by a common misconception. The Companion Pass isn't in exchange for 110,000 points. Once you reach 110,000 CP eligible points within a calendar year, you're automatically awarded the CP. You keep your 110,000 points to use however you want.

You don't even have to have an active balance of 110,000 CP eligible points - you could have spent some of them prior to earning the CP. You just need to earn that many CP eligible points within a calendar year.

Does that make sense?

YES! That's SOOO helpful! And is there a list of ways to earn CP points? We have 2 RT tickets for April and October already purchased this year so it just might be the year to do it!

Companion pass points are just Southwest Rapid Rewards points. Besides the credit card sign up bonuses (and cc usage) you can earn them from Southwest flights, using the Southwest Shopping Portal and use of the Southwest Dining Program.

My mom just said I should be letting charges sit for a little while to make sure they are "accounted for". Please tell me she is wrong and it doesn't matter....I have basically been paying the card as charges post.... Should I stop and just pay monthly!? Should it even matter!?

No charges do not need to sit. Unless you return something you purchased, those points are yours no matter when you pay the bill.
