We are new to frequent flying and are hoping to have enough miles saved by next year to use for next years trip. How does it work with Southwest? I'm assuming that if we purchase a ticket using miles, and the price of the fare goes down, we would not get a credit for rebooking at a lower price. Is this correct?

Southwest has whats called Rapid Rewards........RAPID REWARDS SWA

It's based on one-way flights ( get 2 credits for RT) when you get 16 credits you get a free RT flight on most flights as long as a seat is avail ( they just changed this it use to be any and all flights) . So you aren't really paying a price for the seat so no credits if flight goes down.

The credits have a 24 month expire date ( I think ) I just used mine this last trip with no problems.

Actually the credits expire within one year of earning them but you get two years to accumulate the 16 credits for needed for a free ticket. I wish they would have a longer shelf life!

As the lady at SW told me over the phone "it's hard to beat free!" when I got excited about saving on his free fare.
