I know that previously American Express & Southwest were partners & you could transfer AmEx points over to use for rapid rewards. I believe that partnership ended June 2010. Has anyone heard about any possibilities of it coming back?

We have lots of AmEx points & Southwest is the only direct flight from Albany, NY to Orlando. Could transfer points to Delta and fly that way but flights are connecting & not as convenient timewise. And with 4 young kids convenience & speed are critical, but I'm not sure it is worth $1800+ fees to buy the tickets on Southwest.....

Amex has so many different types of credit cards that it is hard to keep track of. I am not sure what kind of Amex you are have. We have a Amex Blue Sky and we earn travel rewards with that. 100 points (= $100) for every $7,500 hundred that we spend. However there are no limits as to how you can use them. As long as it is somehow related to travel (rental car, airfare, hotel, etc.) you can redeem the points with any company (alamo, SW, delta, any hotel, etc.)

This may not be the card you are talking and then this is not very useful to you, but since I wasn't exactly sure which Amex Card I thought I would post this just in case you had the Blue Sky Card.

Hope your plans work out. :wizard:

Near future.. Chances are virtually zero. Chase bought the bank that issued the SW credit card. People speculate Chase pressured, or required. SW end the relationship with AMEX. Around the same time SW ended the deal with AMEX Chase started to aggressively market the SW credit card.

Same thing is happening with Continental. The deadline for transferring AMEX membership rewards to Continental is approaching and Chase is aggressively marketing the Continental credit card.

You can no longer transfer MR points to Southwest. Sorry!

Yes, Continental is ending late this year as well.

Hope you can find an alternate use of the points - hotels are sometimes decent. Transfer to Delta (first sign up for the bonus on DL's site!) for 30% bonus through the end of the month.

You can find some help on www.flyertalk.com, including the link to DL's bonus.

thanks for the info - I just checked out the flyertalk website - unfortunately I used the Amex promo on DL last year, but maybe I can work out a way to transfer points to DH's DL account instead (he is already a MM on Delta). Would mean a change of planes if we fly DL instead of SW, but for 6 of us be probably at least $1500 cheaper ... think I'm willing to fly through Atlanta instead of direct for that $, and I can rationalize that it will be easier on the kids to break up the flight into 2 shorter ones :)
