southwest airlines cancel policy?

We have a flight scheduled for thursday. I know my tickets are non refundable as they are promotional fare. I know I can use the $$ towards another flight if I cancel. My question is is how long before the flight do I need to cancel in order to keep the credtit?? DS and DD have been sick since sat (going to md this morning) and now my oldest DD woke up with a horrible cough. They were not coming on this trip but I just can't leave them sick. I don't want to cancel until I have to (still holding on to hope) but I don't want to lose any more $$ than I have too.

Donna, if i remember correctly to change a flight is $25.00 a ticket and has to be done before the plane starts boarding. I beleive then you have the credit good for one year after the day you cancel. Hope this helps!

I don't think SW will charge you anything. (I have even just missed flights and still gotten credit!) You have one year to use your credit on another SW Flight.

I had to cancel my trip last September the night before I was to fly out. I was supposed to fly out at 7 am, just when they were predicting the hurricane to hit. I did fly out on another airline a few hours before I was supposed to and missed the storms that never really hit CT.
I was given a cancellation number and I can use the amount I originally paid for the RT flight toward another flight.
The downside is that I have to use the flight within a year of when I booked it. I booked in June for September, so now I have to fly back to FL before June 20th. Too Bad for me. right....
