Just a heads up to everyone that most likely next week the Chase Southwest credit cards that currently are offering 50,000 miles after spending $2,000 in 3 months with a $99 annual fee will be ending.

They will probably be going to back to their normal 25,000 mile sign up bonuses.

In addition to that on March 31st the Rapid Rewards devaluation will take effect meaning that instead of 60 miles per $1 of a fare it'll be going up to 70 miles per $1 of a fare.

Currently a $200 fare will need 12,000 miles to redeem for free but after March 31st that same $200 fare will cost 14,000 miles to redeem.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - but now is the time to get in on the Southwest deals!

Can you cancel the card after a year so you don't have to keep paying the annual fee?

I just saw this on their website, Southwest is new to our airport. I don't like the idea of a $99 annual fee either. I imagine you would loose all your points when you cancel, so probably at least a 2 year commitment? I don't know how many points it takes for a flight.

The point per dollar is hard to calculate. I used points to get a ticket and used 7600 point for a flight that cost $158. If I did the math right that is 47 point per dollar. Now I am thinking of coming home through TPA and the price is $168 or 6642 for the flight. So the price of this flight is higher and the points required are lower than the $158 flight making the $168 flight 39 points per dollar :confused3

yes...pts are good for 2 years after the last activity in your RR account, and there are numerous ways to earn pts.

You dont need a credit card to have a RR account, so cancelling it has no direct impact.

As to the OP -- this offer has come and gone many times over the years. Most likely it will be back in the next 6 months.

There is a $69 option also. You will not lose the points if you cancel.

I would also add that although there is a fee, you basically get that money back in points because they give you either 3,000 or 6,000 points on your card anniversary date, depending on which card you have.

DH and I did this last summer. I got the $99 card (accidentally) and he got the $69 card. I just signed up again a few months ago and this time I got the $69 card (was approved instantly) and just got done with the $2000 needed for the points so just signed DH up again - this time for the $99 card for him. He was approved instantly also.

So, we will have 4 cards but will eventually cancel 2-3 of them and either have 1 card with both of our names on it or each have a card. Don't need 4 yearly fees.

This card has been the best for getting our free flights. Were able to book RT flights to Fort Lauderdale for our upcoming cruise for 4 of us for a little over 50,000 points. So, now with the remaining points from last time and these 2 new cards - we will have over 150,000 points available. This is the only way we can really afford vacations - as airfare alone now costs about $1500-$2000 to fly anywhere from MSP.

You are charged the first year, so when you sign up, there is an immediate $99 fee charged to the account.

I love the southwest card,... Signed up about three years ago... Got one personal and one for my business and got 100k free points... Have been using them both regularly and amassed 240k points, just book for my family of 9 (8 tickets) from buffalo to Orlando and it cost about 130k points... Leaving me with almost enough points to fly the whole family again!

I applied online but was told to call the credit dept. They said that since I was retired and carry no balances on my other cards, I would have had to reduce the credit limits on my two Disney Visa cards in order to get another Southwest Chase Visa. My home airport is EWR and SW has no direct flights to MCO so I was just going to get it for a one time only trip for me and my sis. I told them to cancel my application. My free credit alert service from Target did alert me that Chase accessed my credit report as an inquiry.

They do fly direct to Orlando for Long Island/Islip, a little bit away from Newark but not too far!

Anyone know how long it takes for your 50000pts to post to your account after you reach your spending requirements? I know they say to allow 6-8wks but does it really take that long? Also, do you get the pts for the $2000 required spending in addition?

you earn 1 pt per $ for all spending, so yes --- your $2K will get you another 2000 pts.

At a minimum, you have to have your first statement close before you get your points. There is a REALLY long thread on this board of people's recent experience with the points.
