South Padre Island?

My DH wants to try a new place on our next vacation. We want a nice beach town... but he told me "Why does it always have to be Florida?" So, Florida is out. (Even though, IMO, there are the BEST beach towns in FLA, but what do I know...)

Anyways, tell me about South Padre in July. (Or suggest another beach... Continental US only, please! NOT Hawaii!!!)

I grew up there. It was great when I was a kid. I've found it's not as clean and kept up these days. There is a Schlitterbahn waterpark there now that has become very popular. July is the most crowded month of the year and one of the hottest, as well.

We prefer the beaches of Southern California for our beach vacations. Just got back in fact. We stay on Coronado Island just across the bay bridge from San Diego. Beautiful weather, clean beaches and so much to see and do up and down the coast.

DBF and I went to SPI for a weekend in May. We had a great time but I don't think we could have spent any more than 4 days there. The island is small but there's lots of watersports and lots of restaurants. What type of things do you like to do?
