I have heard how bad south of the border is, what actually is considered south of the border and what is so bad and why is everyone saying to stay away from there. we are driving from ny and we need to stop on enight to sleeop please help. thanks

It's a tacky tourist trap at the NC-SC line. It is advertised by a succession of equally tacky billboards featuring a guy in a big sombrero. Definitely nothing worth seeing.

We stopped there once because we needed coffee and there was a huge coffee shop sign. We walked into what turned out to be a souvenir shop that smelled like pee.

South of the Border YUCK! We stayed there one night just to see what all the hype was about. NEVER again, as posted earlier, it's tackey and worse that that not very clean.

My DH and I were in NC the first 2 weeks of Oct (we were there for DH's job) so on the weekend we decided to drive an hour and check out the border (we hadn't been there in years). I decided it will be several more years before we stop again. You can find a restroom in some of the shops but they are very small and not stocked very well if you know what I mean. They do have a building that is the restroom, but, they are PAID toilets. I can't believe there are still asking you to pay to go to the restroom. Drive a little longer and stay somewhere else that is nicer.

We stayed at South of the Border for the first time in 1976. It was tacky then. We were going to stay a second time in 1999. We figured they might have improved it. They had a big sign advertising rooms for a certain low price. When we stopped and my husband inquired about it, he was told that those rooms were all sold as they only had a limited number. To me that's bait and switch because no where on the sign did it say "Limited supply of rooms". I wouldn't stay there again for anything.
