South Beach Dieters......... Unite

TxBelle, welcome back from the dark side!!!!! I know what you mean about that washboard stomach!! Two kids and two c-sections, even with all the weight I've lost, it is not washboard flat, but I sure wi**** was! You can get back on it and get it all gone, we're here for ya!

TxBelle - A 2 lb gain at WDW is not bad. Plus, you have already lost most of it and the rest will follow quick. GOOD FOR YOU. I learned many years ago not to ask someone if they were expecting, so you could be nine months and I would not open my mouth! :) A friend many years ago before I ever had kids had someone ask her the same thing when her son was about 8 months old... and she was so hurt, so now I err on the other side and never congratulate a mom-to-be until I hear that she is in fact pregnant!
I'm almost done with Week 1. Still struggle when I am out to find a quick snack. I was at the dentist today (no cavities) and then doing errands and got hungry, so I went to the grocery store and bought some cheese strings to eat. This just requires some planning. I am learning.

Hi all

Sheree' I still have about 45lbs left to go to get where I think I want to be. That will bring my weight down to 225. Which I think would be about right even if the BMI says other wise. According to the BMI a 6' 4" male should weight no more than 205. I still haven't complete decided what my goal weight should be though. I have a large frame with broad shoulders ,I still wear a 2XL in some button up shirt for the extra shoulder room even though there is too much fabric at the waist, so you would expect my weight to be a little higher than the average.

I've got to tell you a story though that happened last week. One of my students who I had a couple of years was walking into the school as I was talking to one of the administrative assistants at the information window. She couldn't see my face and didn't recognize me until she heard my voice and turned towards her. She was shocked at the change that had taken place.

TXBell - Congratulation on maintaining for the most part while at WDW. I went to WDW last September and lost a little weight but I was still early in my weight loss (still about 350lbs) so the combination of walking, planning, and having a lot to lose helped. I don't know if I could do it again now or not. I was traveling solo and was able to plan all my meals around trying to be SBD friendly. I had my entire trip planning then a hurricane postponed my trip a couple of days. My days at universal were now in the middle of my trip instead of the end and I had to change room 2 times. At WDW I was staying in studios at BWV and OKW so I had access to a refrigerator and microwave and those were great for helping me stay on program. I purchased microwave omelets for breakfast, sugar free jello for an evening snack, and other good foods for when I was in the room.

WEEK ONE DONE!!!! I started this last Thursday and I made it through the week. Last night had a great South Beach supper... steak on the bbq, salad and asparagus. I could live on asparagus. Love spring veggies. My energy levels are climbing back up too and I went for a 35 minute jog/walk with DD, 10, (she was on her bike) and then this morning I went for a 34 minute jog/walk on my own. It was cooler and I did MUCH better... felt less drenched in sweat and winded. Just sweaty and tired! ;) So... I had to weigh and I am down another 2 lbs which makes four since I started South Beach! I feel good about that. No... I feel GREAT about that. The kids are having fun fair at the school tommorrow night, so I will eat before we go! This does take planning, but I can do it. I still get the odd craving, but I think it is more habit than anything.

Jeremy, you sound like my husband, except your a little taller. He is also trying to get to the 220's. He's been on this plan as long as I have, however, he cheats a lot more than I do, so he's only lost 35 pounds since we started last Jan. Great thing is that he's kept it off despite what he eats. I know you x-student not recognizing you was Wonderful. That happens to me quite a bit at church. Our church is huge and you really can go a long time without seeing people. So when I run into someone who sits on the other side where I used to they are like what happened to you!!!!! I just grin and say I've been watching what I eat. They don't have to know my wonderful secret!

Calena, wtg. 4 pounds down since you started!!!! How wonderful for you. Keep up with the exercise. I know it will help you lose weight, cause it helped me surpass my goals.

Well, it's late, and I've got lots of email to check. See ya all later!

Wow! :cheer2: Everybody has been doing so well!! :cheer2:
:cheer2: Congratulations!!! :cheer2:
I've been out of touch for the last few weeks wrapping up the school year and starting grad school, again. I stumbled the last week of school -- it was like a minefield of cookies, cakes, doughnuts, candy, pizza, and who knows what else. I missed two Tops meetings in a row -- one night we had tickets for Wicked (my Christmas present), and the other night was graduation. Net result: a gain of 3 1/2 pounds. SO, back to phase 1 to get back on track. I also bought a new bicycle -- my 1975 Schwin Collegiate 5 speed with the really skinny tires was overwhelmed by my 2005 bulk. My husband liked it so well that he bought one too. We rode them home from the bike shop on Monday night, and I've been doing at least 40 minutes a day since. I did my time this afternoon and then did another 45 minutes tonight after dinner with Steve. Gotta move, gotta move, gotta move. Hopefully, I'll have better results to report next Tuesday.

Oh you guys, I am having such a struggle with Ph 2. I don't know what my deal is. I start out each day really well. No, that is not true, I have not been having well planned breakfasts although they have been on program. Lunch I do really well too. But then somewhere between early afternoon and after dinner I have something that is not a good choice at all. Yesterday it was a few bites of my kids frozen custard, the day before that was a piece of cake the kids had made for DH and I while I was at work. Today, I took DD out for a mommy and girl time and we went to the bookstore cafe, she got a brownie and I ate much of it since she didn't like it. (And I did.) I kept telling myself that I should just throw it away, but then I would take another bite.

I am just feeling down about the whole thing. I'm thinking of joining the SBD online thing and getting my menus planned out for me for the next couple of months. I am wondering and feeling like I would probably do better with a specific menu plan and if it is not on my menu, I just cannot have it. I think I actually am still at a place where I do better with fewer choices.

Anyone else been here done this? I am really needing some encouragement. I have lost 19 lbs so far and just need to keep going down.

Julie - what about fruit? I am really looking forward to fruit when I start phase 2. There are so many wonderful choices out there right now... strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blueberries etc. Wait - I am starting a craving. It is funny, but I really am looking forward to fruit more than the elusive cookie! I am a total newbie, so I defer to the more experienced South Beachers out there, but I know how hard it is with kids and temptations. Tonight is the fun fair at the school. I signed up to take a cake for the cake walk, but just could not handle baking right now, so I cancelled that and will volunteer to work at a booth instead.
I agree about liking the strictness of South Beach. If it is not on the list, I can't have it. No guess work involved.
I am into week 2 now. Last night was hectic because I had a meeting so I made a quick stir fry. I made mine plain and took out my portion, then added sweet and sour sauce for DH and the kids. I also made rice - for them. I had no rice... just plain stirfry with no sauce and it was good. My little boys love rice. I'm just using up my stash of rice and will be buying brown rice later on. Tonight will also be a challenge for supper before we go, but we will do this! ;)

I signed up for the online beach experience and can't really recommend it. The customized menus are just the menus from the book. I'm sure there are other bells and whistles that might make it worthwhile, but I haven't had time to go digging for them. Am I missing "good stuff"?
:confused3

Lori, I signed onto it when I first started and then after 2 months cancelled because it didn't help me much. I know some like it for the updates, but for me, it wasn't worth it. There are many other online sources that would help you out much much more.

Marching into week 2 doing well. I am starting to get impatient to see the scale drop dramatically, but I am just sticking with South Beach and drinking my water. Last night I was at the Fun Fair at school with the kids and it just gets depressing to see these razor thin moms sometimes. I'm sure you know the ones I mean. My weight loss goal is to put me right at a healthy BMI - not borderline but not way down there either. If I wanted to look like them my goal would be to lose 60 lbs! Anyway, it just gets discouraging sometimes... so I rushed to the scale this a.m. hoping to see another loss... since I did not eat any ice cream, cotton candy, bake sale goodies, hot dogs and etc. at the Fun Fair. No extra loss, but 4 lbs down since I started South Beach is still great and I can feel the difference in my clothes.... so I will keep going.
Went for my wog this morning because it is going to be HOT today. It was already hot when I went so I had to slow down at the end, but was still drenched in sweat - the body is working! Also moves me to drink lots of extra water.
Have a great day all. Thanks for the encouragement on this board. :flower:

Hi everyone- I just started day 1 of phase 1. Help! ;)

No, actually, I'm really excited. I just finished my first breakfast of veggie to-go quiches, and it was awesome!

I've never done a written diet before...I've only ever cut back on eating based on what I knew about nutrition...or whatever seemed the trend at that time. I've been keeping a journal for 4 months now, working toward eating whole, non-processed foods. After chatting w/ calena about South Beach, I decided to look at the book. It seems to be the way I've been eating for the last few monthes w/ some minor modifications, so I think I can do it. I was really impressed with the emphasis on heart health (I need to cook for my DH who has to cut cholesterol), so this seems to be the plan to start with.

OK- fair warning... I might have lots of questions... :flower:

More soon...

calena, don't get discouraged. It will come. Also remember that you are exercising and that also means muscle, which mean it weighs more than fat. Don't judge by the scale only. How do your clothes fit? How do you feel? There are so many ways to measure success!

rcyannacci, welcome!!!! I'm glad you decided to join us. Many of us have had great success here. Ask your questions away. We are more than willing to answer your questions and to help in any way we can!!!!!

OK...first question. What's the verdict on drinking milk? I have an iced coffee every morning (w/ coffee 1 c. of skim milk, and Splenda) and sometimes one in the afternoon as well. Can I keep doing this?

Yes, rcy.--you can drink milk. In the revised version of SBD he wants you to have 2 to 3 servings of dairy each day, so your iced coffee can be worked in.

Try it with vanilla sugar free syrup too. Yummmy!!

I am going back to Ph 1 for a week to see if I can get myself back on track. The whole week, I have just been a little off and I need to get focused. So, I am hoping this will do it. Still haven't decided about the SBD website subscription. Still thinking on it.

This weekend I am painting my bathroom in a Mickey theme so that will keep me busy!

Thanks, Julie! What a great idea w/ the syrup!

OK- question #2...how about deviled eggs? (I mix the yolk w/ mayo and red wine vinegar, no relish). Is mayo OK in moderation, or would that be considered a "bad fat"? (I'm trying to think of something I can both bring and eat to a pot-luck picnic.)

If it has soybean, canola or olive oil for the oil, then you are okay with the mayo. And no added sugar. Or I have heard 3 grams or less of sugar.

Have you seen the 3 Fat Chicks website. I go to the SBD forum a lot because there are tons of answers alread there in there FAQ area. I can usually find what I am looking for without having to wait for an answer.

This is the link for the FAQ section http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=115

rcyannacci , glad julie helped. I haven't been on to write back. That website is a great one, I use it myself. Let us know if your still looking for more information!

I SEE the difference. The clothes are fitting differently! I am wearing a pair of capris a T-shirt and 3/4 shirt over it which I wore 9 days ago and they fit differently... better, no cling! I feel great! I didn't have time to weigh this a.m. and will wait until Thursday, the end of my two weeks to do so.
Yesterday was a bit of a challenge with the weekly Sunday dinner at my in-laws, the grandparents. Once again, I skipped the potatoes, and ate my Ceaser Salad sans crutons. When dessert came I was served a small slice of pound cake. Fortunately DS, 5, came over and wanted more so he helped eat my slice, but I did have a bite or two. HOW do we handle these social situations... when you just get served a piece of cake and you don't want to be rude. My father-in-law also had beer because it was so hot and he wanted all the adults to have beer, but I said I needed water because I was going to be driving that afternoon to pick up DD from a birthday party. I actually have no desire for beer after reading South Beach... it is worse than sugar!
However, back to a South Beach supper at night, so I can't let two bites of something derail me, nor can I let two bites on Sunday noon turn into a bucket of ice cream on Sunday night or an order of fries on Monday and so on.. you get my drift.
How do you handle social situations though with our "good carb" eating plan? I think once I hit Phase 2 - or 3 for that matter - it will be much easier!
