South Beach Dieters......... Unite

I'm on Day five and so far i'm down just about 3lbs. Now I know I shouldn't be weighing myself each day, and I promise not to until my next real weigh in on thursday, but from yesterday to today I gained a little. Not that much, only about 0.8 of a pound, but is that normal? I hope this doesn't mean i'm doing something wrong.. I'm so nervous that I wont lose anymore.

Congratulations QuiltTeddy! :cheer2: MyMatisse- Everyone loses at their own pace. Three pounds is a good result so far. When I started SB, people on this board recommended that I take my measurements and track my progress based on the inches lost rather than the pounds lost. That was great advice! For some people on SB, the inches around the waist and lower tummy area come off first, then the weight follows. So far I have lost 10.5 pounds on SB since mid-January, but I have lost 6 inches around my waist and 9 inches around my lower tummy/hips area. Using the tape measure to gauge my progress rather than the scale has really helped keep me focused. As others have said, it took a long time to put the weight on, and it may take a long time to take all of the weight off. SB is a lifestyle change not just a diet. Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

One thing that confuses me is that I thought by removing sugar and carbs from our diet we would lose the cravings for those things - sweets and such. I was hoping this to be true because my biggest problem is bakery goods, cookies, etc.

However, I see all these recipes for sweet treats that use artificial sweeteners. Wouldn't the fact that you still feed your sweet tooth in some way (even though its not "real" sugar) make you continue to want sweets?

Confused!
Kris :confused3

Kris, you are doing great. Most artifical sweetners don't have any effect on you weight loss. I use so litle in most of my cooking that it's minimal. Look for DaVinci syrups that add great flavor to your baking, drinks, etc. The thing about SBD is smart carbs, so using artifical sweetners must be better than using the real thing. I mostly use splenda.

Quiltteddy, congrats. I'm glad it wasn't the other, it's much more bothersome. I hope that your stomach is feeling better.

Mymatisse, stay off that evil scale!!!! I know I had that problem too. Loved the scale. You must remember that you weight will vary from day to day. Sometimes it could be just water weight or other things going on with your body at the time.

Congratulations to all the LOSERS :cool1: :cool1:   :cheer2: :cheer2:

Good morning everyone! :sunny:

Lisa, I'm the same way. I've been weighing myself almost every day and I have noticed that my weight fluctuates. I'll weigh a little more one day and then lose it the next. It's normal so don't worry about it. I know, easier said than done. ;)

I'm starting week four and so far am down 8.9 lbs. I was hoping to be able to get my 10 lb clippie but maybe next week. As long as I keep losing something I'll be happy. :goodvibes

Hi everyone! I was "under the weather" last week so I didn't post much. I'm feeling much better and am back to exercising with a vengence!

Congrats to all of you "losers!" Y'all are doing so great!!!

Welcome to all of the newbies. :flower:

Lisa, I totally understand where you are coming from.....we've both been there several times together, haven't we? Anyway, your doctor gave you great advice. My family physician wants me to weigh 140 and my gynecologist says between 142-150. I think I should just concentrate on the weight that I feel good at. I don't know that weight yet, but when I get there, I'll know. I'm not really worried about what the scale says anymore. I'm still concentrating on how I feel and look. I'm glad you are getting happy about where you are now. You've come a L-O-N-G way and should be VERY proud of yourself. :cool1:

Hi All,

Im absolutely amazed at the results I'm getting on South Beach. I started phase I on Sunday and weighed 192lbs, currently im on Day 2 and im down a shocking total of...4lbs! Im not expecting to lose 2 lbs per day for the whole 2 weeks  but wow! Im already seeing changes in my body.

My goal is to lose 15lbs (from this weight) by May 12th. Yes that is one month, but I work out daily and drink water like a camel ;) Im very confidant that I can do it. Why one month you ask?? Well look at my counter, I"m doing the 30 day dance :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I've lost a total of 10lbs since January (not following any diet and having many cheat days along the way :sad2: ), so with the additional 15 it will be a total of 25 :)

Im pumped and I've promised myself not to become scale obsessive. I also took the advise given on this thread and have taken my measurements to track my progress that way as well.

Wdw4life,

I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one and there are others in the same boat. I'll just keep plugging along.. hopefully I'll get results sooner or later. :cool1:

Hi All

Great to see so many new people here. Everybody her is doing so great.

Lisa (Mymatisse) - 3 lbs in 5 days is great. Don't worry about a small weight gane. You are going to have fluxuations from day to day. It's normal. If you are going to weigh yourself frequently you might want to chart them. For me it helped because it showed how far I have come and how 1/2 a lb or 1 or even 2 lbs (see below) is no reason to break down and undo all the work I've done. When I look back at my chart it looks like almost like a saw blade leaning down. A jagged line up and down but the general trent is down.

Kim - Great job. I know you will be getting that 10lb clippie soon.

Lisa (Zeraspride) - Good to see you on here again. I am not even close to getting to my "Goal weight" but I am already wondering what that should be. According to the BMI, I should weigh no more than 200 lbs. When I check my body fat% either on fit day or using a hand held monitor it says I have more than 200lbs of lean mass right now. I've decided like you to let my body decide where it want to "feel good". I still have goals in mind but if I come up a bit short but feel great, look good, and have great energy that's want matters.

I was busy again last weekend (Third in a row out of town). This time, my parents talked me into helping them with a retreat at an area camp ground. I am an adult PK (Preachers Kid) and my parents for the past two years have organized a weekend retreat for pastors and their families. My parents asked me if I would watch over and organize the childrens portion of the retreat. Me and a highschool girl had 4 boys and 2 girls to take care of while the Pastors and Spouses were in their meetings. We played a lot of games, roamed around the park and in general had a lot of good exercise chasing kids around. We also led a couple of devotions and did some crafts. The bad part was having no control over what was being served for the three meals we were there. Friday night - Pizza; Saturday Breakfast Pancakes, eggs, sausages, and muffins; Saturday Lunch, Hamburger, potato salad, and brownie. I bit the bullet and what a could, tried to limit the amounts of what I couldn't and didn't do too bad. Sunday, we had singers from West Virginia at the church and fed them lunch. We misplanned and didn't have enough for us that cooked. The package said about 8 chicken breasts and really had 6. So, the 4 of us decided to go out for lunch. The people in the other car picked (you guessed it) Pizza Hut. To my surprise, they had a low carb pizza on the menu (22 carbs for a personal size pizza). A thin crispy crust pizza and not bad. Last night, went to men's meeting at church and what are they serving, breaded porkchops, Mashed Potatos, Mixed vegetables, salad and desert. I picked the porkchops with the least amount of breading, loaded up on Vegetables and salad, and tried to have just a little desert. If that's not enough, I found out that tomorrow, the wednesday night meal at church is Spaghetti. I give up (not on the diet). I'm going to bring my own meal Wednesday (either the whole meal or just cook some of my own spaghetti and take it). If there is only one shining star it's that I am only up a little under 2 lbs. I'm sure all of the extra physical activity helped.

Hi all,
Congrats to everyone for having such success with SB! I haven't started the diet yet, but I am eager to join the group and lose some unwanted pounds.

A few questions first....is there a certain SB book I should purchase first? Do I need to buy a seperate book for different recipes?
That is what I am most concerned with, how will I know what to eat and how much of it to eat?

Thanks in advance,
Donna

Hi Donna! Definitely get the blue South Beach Diet book and read it from cover to cover. There is a recipe book that is pink, but I don't have it. I get my recipes on-line. You will know what to eat and how much when you read the book. It is very informative. Good luck!!!

Thank you for the reccomendation of the blue SB book, WeirdEyes. I couldn't wait to go to Walmart to buy one so I checked it out at the library a little bit ago, along with the cookbook.

I'm excited to get started but nervous about what lies ahead.

rnd4life, I just wanted to say welcome. The book is a great read and it really helps. I never brought the receipe book, instead I just looked them up online when I wanted to try something new. It is a great place to be and we look forward to you coming back!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeremy, I'm an adult PK too!!!! I'm constantly doing something for my parents church!!! Glad to see that you hung in there and that this diet is so adapatable. BTW, pizza is wonderful if you decide to eat the toppings off of it. That's what I do. I'm sure that whatevers on will be water weight.

Tink, wtg. How wonderful for you. This is a wonderful way to lose weight and keep it off!! Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, everyone, I'm back from a WDW week! I just caught up on the thread -- yow, this place is really hopping!! Welcome, everybody who is joining in the ever-shrinking crowd! I can't get over the results I've been reading -- keep up the fabulous work!

I just have to share one insight I had last week as I was thousands of miles away from my scale. I've been a bit down lately because I started the 12-Week Boot Camp and after I started working out regularly, my weight went UP. Now, let's see, I didn't change the way I was eating, except to drop whole grains for a few weeks, and I added lots of exercise, especially weight work -- where on earth did the extra weight in the scale come from?? Well, it's totally obvious even to me that it's muscle weight, and this is definitely good news! So, I think the conclusions are clear: 1) I am going to keep up the regular workouts. 2) I am staying off that nasty resolve-sapping, confusion-inducing scale except for weekly weigh-ins. 3) I am vain. 4) Also, silly.

Have a fantastic Tuesday, everyone!

:sunny:

thotful spot, it is definately muscle. Don't be discouraged!! I know your clothes look better, you feel better, and I know the weight will come off. It's happened to me so many times!!! I'm exercising still and am still amazed at the progress I see within my own body. Welcome back!!!!!!!!!!!

Thotfulspot, great job!!!! I know I've noticed a BIG difference in my body since I added weights. I can actually see my muscles in my arms and legs. My calf muscles are HARD and I see them when I walk (yes I look)! I used to look at girls with great calf muscles with envy.

I stepped on the scale today and I am finally down 2 lbs. I seem to be losing around 2-4 lbs per month. Gosh, can it get any slower? LOL

Hi guys,

Just checking in and hoping you are having a Beachy Wednesday. It is so good to see so many new Beachers (and lots of Lisa's) on our thread! This is a great program and this is a great thread to get lots of encouragement. I need to do a better job of stopping by and sharing. It can get frustrating when you don't see the scale move and I start to get down on myself and don't feel much like communicating at those times but I gotta snap out of that mode so here I am!

The scale is cooperating for now but we all know how evil and what a back stabber the scale can be. I try to go by my measuring tape, which has been my friend from the beginning of this journey, how my clothes fit and how absolutely wonderful I feel eating this way and getting in lots of exercise.

I actually had someone call me "waif-like" on Monday. I smiled all day at that comment which is very untrue but kind nonetheless.

I claimed my new 105 pound clippie, ain't it beautiful? I've got 18.5 pounds to go to get to goal and no matter how long it takes, I'm going to get there. One of the main advantages of weight loss slowing down for me is that I've been given an opportunity to really make this a way of life and don't even think of eating off plan. I think if I would have dropped the weight too fast, I wouldn't have learned half the lessons about myself and food that I have so instead of looking at it like a death sentence, I am determined to enjoy the process of taking off these last pounds.

Sheree - you are and have always been a rock here and on the Firm thread. I'm so grateful for your presence!

thotfulspot - I commented on your thread about your eating at Disney and I want to say again how impressed I am and how proud I am of you for coming back from Disney with a weight loss and enjoying such wonderful yummy food. Thanks for all the suggestions you gave us. I have found too that both times I have upped my weights my weight loss has slowed but the inches come off pretty steady. I lose anywhere from 3-5 inches per month but only lose about 2 pounds per month now. The good news is that even though I weigh 176 pounds, I wear a solid size 10 and even have a pair of size 8 stretch capris. I know the work outs are responsible for being able to wear smaller sizes. So you are right, take heart and lets both avoid the evil scale except on weigh in days.

Sheila - I so agree with you that my weight loss has slowed to a crawl. I guess I got spoiled losing 2-4 pounds per week in the beginning. Now I'm fortunate to lose 2-3 pounds in a month! But we're headed in the right direction and I guess that's what matters most, right? Congrats on your 2 pound loss!!!

Okay guys,

I'm coming to the end of my first week and haven't lost a dang thing :( This is what I had to eat yesterday... could someone tell me what i'm doing wrong?

I've gained back 2 of the lbs I've lost effectively putting my weighloss as maybe 1 lb?

Has this happened to anyone else? I don't really know what i'm doing wrong.

Here's an example of what I had to eat yesterday.

Breakfast: Salad with aprox. 2 tbls of lf feta cheese, 2 tbls of dressing (1 gram sugar, made with soybean oil), 2tbls humus and a few chunks of leftover chicken.

Snack: 15 cashews

Lunch: Pinto Beans w/ 1 slice 2percent cheese topped with nonfat plain yogurt

Snack: a couple turkey peperoni pieces & wedge of light laughing cow

Dinner: 1 1/2 bowls of veggie chilie made with Morning star veggie crumbles, McCormack Chillie seasoning(no sugars), mushrooms, kidney beans, and grean beans.

Desert: ricotta cream with 1 squirt lf whipped cream, vanilla extract, 2 packets of splenda.

I also drank about 52 oz of water.

I'm 5'3 and need to lose like 65lbs. Shouldn't I be losing something by now?

Reading about everyones success is keeping me going eventhough this is CRAZY frustrating. I figure something should budge sooner or later? Hopefully? :)
