South African runner Semenya An Intersexed Individual

The correct term in use now is "intersex" not hermaphrodite.
That may be the PC term for it but I copied and pasted the headline directly from a newspaper and saw several other news sources saying the same thing. It is also the term I was taught in my Women's Studies classes as well as my Biology classes.

I don't really have an opinion about her past win, however I don't think she should be allowed to compete. Not all careers work for every person, regardless of talent. Life's not fair that way. I'm sure we all know people who have a great talent that they are unable to use for one reason or the other.

She can continue to run and run well, but it's not fair to enter her into a competition as a woman with a known advantage over all the other female competitors.

What if she had the internal testes removed?

That is what I was wondering. She obviously doesn't have external male organs.

She has lived her whole life as a woman. She isn't from the US where people go to hospitals and have xrays and scans at every turn. There might have been questions but I don't think she knew definitely what her issues were until the tests were preformed.

I feel horrible for her. This was handled so badly.

I think the most likely compromise would be for her to have the male organs surgically removed and compete as a woman.

I think the win should stand and disallow her from further competition until the issue is resolved.

What if she had the internal testes removed?
That would probably be a painful procedure, but if she is willing to go through it then I don't think I'd have any second thoughts at all about her being allowed to race as a woman.

South African runner Caster Semenya reportedly is a hermaphrodite — a person with male and female sexual characteristics.
Semenya, 18, won the women's 800 metres with ease at last month's world track and field championships in Berlin amid accusations that she is a man.
Several media outlets reported Thursday that gender tests conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations in July reveal she has internal testes — male sexual organs which produce testosterone — and no womb or ovaries.
Semenya also has three times more testosterone in her system than a normal female.
IAAF spokesman Nick Davies confirmed to The Associated Press in an e-mail that the test results had been received by track's governing body but won't be made public for "at least a few weeks."
"They now need to be examined by a group of experts and we will not be in a position to speak to the athlete about them for at least a few weeks," he wrote. "After that, depending on the results, we will meet privately with the athlete to discuss further action."
"I see it all as a joke," Semenya told You, a South African magazine in which she strikes a glamorous pose on the cover of the most recent issue.
"It doesn't upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself.
"I am who I am and I'm proud of myself. I don't want to talk about the tests — I'm not even thinking about them."
The tests incited outrage in South Africa which has embraced Semenya as a national heroine, regardless of her sexual ambiguity.
As such, the IAAF is reluctant to revoke her gold medal and/or disqualify her from future competitions.
"There certainly is evidence Semenya is a hermaphrodite," an anonymous source familiar with the IAAF inquiry told the Sydney Daily Telegraph. "The trouble is the IAAF now have the whole ANC and the whole of South Africa on their backs.
"Everything is going to have to be done absolutely by the book. No question of a challenge to our findings."
'It is complicated'

South African track coach Wilfred Daniels resigned in shame, admitting he failed Semenya for not telling her the IAAF planned to test her.
Once mandatory for female Olympians, gender testing was scrapped in 1999.
Final results on Semenya will be forthcoming in two weeks.
"There is all sorts of scans you do," the source was quoted in the Daily Telegraph. "This is why it is complicated.
"In the past, you used to do a gynecological exam, blood test, chromosome test, whatever. That is why they [results] were challenged because it is not quite so simple.
"What they do now is they do everything and then they can say, 'Look, not only has she got this, she has got that and the other.'
"The problem for us is to avoid it being an issue now which is very personal. Of the organs being a hermaphrodite, of not being a real woman, it is very dramatic."

Should her win still count?

The title of this thread is completely irresponsible.

There is only one report out of Australia that is claiming they have "seen" leaked reports of Semenya's gyno results. There is no proof nor any official statement that anything this Australian reporter has said is true, yet some media, the ones that thrive on sensationalism, have jumped on it.

Athletics South Africa head Leonard Chuene resigned from the IAAF board in protest at its handling of the affair but has now hinted that he regrets the move. He said more information was needed: "They told us this week that the tests are inconclusive and they could not give us the results just yet. So I really don't know where the Australian media got this latest one from.''

The poor woman has withdrawn from all engagements and future races and it has been confirmed that she is now in trauma counseling.

Wouldn't it be more prudent to wait for the official results before making claims that "Semenya is a Hemophrodite?" If she is, then this could be a relevant discussion. But as for now, it is completely based on an unsubstantiated claim by a single Australian reporter.

I only copied and pasted the title. If you have an issue with it, I suggest you take it up with the newspapers and other media outlets reporting it.

You posted it as truth and are asking for a discussion based on this "truth."

Nobody but the experts who are reviewing what has been admitted complicated results, knows if she has testes, what her testosterone levels are or even what her genetic makeup is (is she xx, xy, or some other combination?).

While I see your point, the vast majority of the news websites are showing it as fact and my copying and pasting their title is not "irresponsible." No one has denied the report (in fact, both the grandmother's statement and the coach's statement appear to confirm that those test results were likely), either which speaks volumes.

I am not at all surprised that Semenya's gender has been determined as intersex. It was one of my first thoughts when I saw pictures of her. It's a shame that this has not been determined before now - but not surprising either.

Has it been handled in a dignified manner? no. I hope there is not lasting impact for this young lady. If she chooses to keep identifying herself as female, then she needs to be under the care of a doctor specializing in transgender issues.

Should she be competing as an international athlete? again no. Through no fault of her own, she is not the same as the other female athletes and does have an unfair advantage. How do international governing organizations treat transgendered people? I don't know.

Oh for heavens sake! It is not irresponsible to report and quote the same article I read on msnbc.com last week.

I feel for her as well, but I also think she should not compete ahainst other women.

I read an article shortly after this story was leaked, but it stated that the officials would allow her to keep her medal.

If she doesn't have a Y chromosome, then she isn't a he.

This is all very interesting.

Whether or not she should be able to compete as a women, I guess should come down to how these interenational sports organization are going to define a man and a woman. Is it based on what type of body parts you have? Is it based on how much testosterone or estrogen you have? Is it based on your chromosonal makeup? I know it seems like a stupid question, but this goes to show it is something that needs to be made clear.

The problem with them taking out what hormone tissue she has is that she will need to be on replacement for the rest of her life, so she needs a very good endocrinologist who's experienced in dealing with estrogen/progesterone/testosterone issues. I'm not sure she could get that in her country. It's hard enough to find someone in the states that is good! There are medications she can take that would suppress her testosterone levels, that combined with estrogen/progesterone replacement could potentially make her closer to a"normal" woman.

I think until they sort it out, no, she shouldn't run against women. It's not fair. Nor should she run against the guys. Sometimes you just have to play the hand you're dealt and you don't always get what you want.

So where is all this information coming fronm?

That's got to be a scary thing for this young lady...if the ruling comes out that she can't compete against women unless something medical occurs (surgery, hormone therapy), will she get the advice and treatment that is in her own best interest? People from any country would have reason to double check the advice of their country's sports federation, but it doesn't seem like her family is very sophisticated. I'd hate to see her make a decision that would advance a possibly brief running career if it would hurt her health in the long term. I hope some smart people that she trusts are in her life.

She has testes, produces testosterone. Testosterone is what makes her faster than any of the other female runners around her.

She shouldn't compete as a female, but I have no problem with her living her life as a female, and I would relate to her as such.

It's almost like she has a built in doping system-it's just not a level playing field with the other runners.
