Sorry this seems like a silly question:

Not silly at all!

We did 5.00/day and left it on the table every day.

Never a silly question on these boards. We do $3 per day (there are three of us) and I always leave it in an envelope marked housekeeping or mousekeeping. If they become very creative as some have we then tip another couple dollars a day. Just depends.

If you're a solo traveler do you still tip $1 a day?

You don't NEED to tip. It seems a small minority of folks DO, however. It looks like most are in the area of $1/per person/per day.

presleyg, we personally do tip at other hotels also. I tip the people who bring me food, so I will tip the people that change my sheets!
If we are only staying overnight we don't tip, but if it is more then one night we do.

I've always tipped every where, usually $2 or $3 a day. When we were at AS Music a few years ago, the housekeeping arranged my children's toys in a cute way in the window. Big tip for them :D

I've consulted in the hospitality industry and also trained employees in all types of jobs. I figure, I tip the bell people with my luggage and the restaurant people, too. When we do a taxi ride we tip the taxi person, so I just extend it to other people.

Now, I only tip for good service. If what I receive is medicore then I don't tip.

As far as housekeeping goes, I think that the job they do is as difficult as that of a waitress (I was a waitress for many years and did "shadow" housekeepers in a hotel). I tip nicely the first night I am there to "set the tone" and it almost always works well. They then go above and beyond to do a nice job and get me anything I ask for, within reason.

We, also, tip whenever we are at a hotel, not just Disney. Sometimes if we are only staying one night, I forget to do it. But, in general we typically do tip housekeeping.

Did anyone ever find out if the mousekeepers at All Stars are now allowed to keep their tips? I remember a thread months ago in which a CM told us that they were not allowed to keep their tips -- somthing about sending donations to the CM's charity of choice. I always tip when we are staying at a hotel for more than one night, but if the person is not allowed to keep it, I can find a better way to spend my money. If I want to donate to charities, I will do it at home where it benefits my community and I get my tax receipt ! At the time of the past post, someone on these boards e-mailed Disney to ask and they would not respond to this question because they consider it "wages" and therefore would not comment.

The official WDW stance is that housekeeping is not a tipped position since they are not paid as tipped employees.
Waitresses for example, are paid under the minimum wage because they are classified by the IRS as tipped employees. Housekeepers are paid minimum wage or better and are not classified by the IRS as tipped employees.
It's really up to you whether you tip housekeeping or not. If you do, great! You're making someone's day a little better. If you don't, great! You're playing by the rules and are not depriving anyone of anything that they have coming.
JMO...

Many years ago I did housekeeping for a major chain. Let me say that it was the worst job I ever had. My back has never hurt me as much as it did with that job. The inspection team that followed our work was tough. The alloted time for each room was 30 minutes.....imagine having to change the sheets on 2 beds, clean up the peoples mess they left, clean the entire tub/shower surround, floor, toilet, sinks, clean the mirrors, replace towels and toiletries, vacuum and dust....it's nearly impossible if you do it the right way. I was paid the same as a highschool kid asking a customer if they wanted fries with their order. Those few guests who left a dollar or two made my day!!!!!! They had no idea how it made me feel. True, there is no rule to tip, but when you think about the whole tipping thing........why would you tip someone who only drove you a few blocks but NOT tip someone who cleaned your nasty body hair and grunge out of the tub? I tipped housekeeping long before I ever did the job myself......only now I tip more. If I feel the job is not worth tipping, I do not stay in that hotel.....that means it is just plain disgusting and believe me, I have been to hotels like that. I know housekeeping shortcuts and I know what to look for. This post is not to make someone feel guilty into leaving tips....just a view from the other side. You do not have to leave a tip if you do not want to...it's just a nice jesture for VERY hard work. :D

I agree with Sleepy! I don't like to clean my own home, really wouldn't want to clean a hotel room! We are a pretty clean group of 3 and we always tip, at WDW and elsewhere. I feel they are providing me personal service. And minimum wage isn't near what they should be paid.
We usually tip $3-5 a day.

We tip Housekeeping $5.00 a day and always have...I know how messy my two little ones can be at times on vacations...besides I used to clean rooms as well when I was younger and like Sleepy, I was very excited when a room left me a couple of dollars...LOL! :)
