Must be hard on them, 75 percent of our schools computers are 4+ years old. Some over 10 years old.
Some places...at least those that can afford it, will depreciate computer equipment in a 3-5 year time frame and replace. Desktops/laptops on the lower end of the spectrum, generally. Not because they don't work, necessarily - but because they aren't "fast enough" any more. Think about the things you used your computer for 5 years ago. Has it changed all that much? Web, email, Word, etc.
But is your 5 year old computer as fast at doing any of that stuff today? No - because web pages are bloated, Word is bloated, etc. You need more memory and CPU now than you did 5 years ago to do the same work.
That said, we have servers at work that are still running - after 12 years. It hasn't been replaced because the software won't run on anything newer. If it dies - well, that's management's problem now.
