Sorry, but no need to sell "Cosmo" magazine for all to see at resort gift shop...

I know I may be asking too much, but do the resorts really need to sell Cosmo and other such magazines that boldly announce "30 new sex positions" etc. right at the check out for all to see? I understand I may be a little prudish when it comes to that, but any child who can read couldn't miss it, or the others. I go to Disney (with my 13 year old) to get away from that crap. Anybody else notice that?

Do you take your children to the supermarket?

Do you know how your children *got* here?

To compromise, Disney could do what Walmart does and put blockers in front of it. Then again maybe there's a reason I don't shop at Walmart. :guilty:

My thoughts exactly!

There are all kinds of things that we as parents must be prepared to explain to our children, even if the explanation is dismissive in nature and not very "explaining," if you know what I mean.

I'm sure you've seen some guests at the parks and your resort dressed in provocative/revealing clothing, some guests showing public displays of affection, and some guests using foul language.

I realize that these aren't perfect analogies, because Disney can control what magazines it displays and can't control how its guests behave and dress (for the most part), but we as parents have to help our kids function in the real world, and WDW is actually still part of the real world.

The ONLY place on this earth that we are capable of totally controlling the environment is our own homes. Outside of our own homes, we have to be prepared for just about anything.

I actually found Hoop Dee Doo Revue to have a lot of (mildly) sexually suggestive material, but I was ready to address any comments my kids made about it.

Hey, even Bambi revealed to us that he felt "twitterpated," you know?!

I guess it doesn't bother me since you walk into a grocery or convenience store and see the same thing.

They sell prophylactics at Disney gift shops too :earseek:

They don't block the Cosmo covers at our Wal Mart.

Wow, while I agree with the sentiment behind the responses, the tone sure was dismissive and rude! Come on guys! There was NO other way to disagree with the OP than to make sarcastic commentary? Sometimes I shake my head at this place...

For my part, I am not bothered by the glamour magazines at the checkout in any store. While I abhor the messages they send (that being sexy, looking sexy, and having sex are the only things women should value), I don't find them offensive or inappropriate overall.

I have a 12 yr. old DD and a 9 yr. old DS. To me children are exposed
to this everywhere. When we go to the grocery store my children see these
magazines but could care less about them. They don't even glance at them
because their eyes are on the teen and video magazines. So if you don't make a big deal out of it, I'm pretty sure their not even noticing the magazines. :sunny:

I had to explain the liquor in plain site at Pop, but not the magazines to my son.

I don't drink liquior, so he had no clue that it was the "hard" stuff. I don't read Cosmo either, but I think he's so use to seeing those kind of covers at almost every store we go to, he didn't need to ask.

I guess maybe I'm responsible for starting the controversy on the thread. :guilty: Yes I'm a 20 something professional, no I don't have children. But to my defense I do have a BA in Women's Studies, and if I don't have a problem with Cosmo, maybe feminsism is really dead.

While we're at it lets get a turtle neck sweater on Ariel--lol
Isn't a sweaty Ariel necking with a turtle the sort of thing the OP is referring to?? :teeth:

Honestly, my 12 year old and my 15 didn't even notice the magazine. With all the Disney merchandise in every gift shop, the last thing they noticed was the newspaper and magazine rack. I will admit that when we go to disney we barely keep track of legitimate news.

How is sarcasm rude?

If Disney is going to hold itself out as the paragon of family vacation entertainment, they should be more sensitive to this kind of stuff. Remember Disney is famous for attention to detail. They missed the detail in this instance IMO.

Just because they sell Cosmo at other places commonly visited by children, like the supermarket or pharmacy doesn't make it appropriate for a "Disney" resort gift shop - again IMO.

I also disagree with some of the tone used by some in responding to the OP. I got the same when I commented on the insulting slogans on the T-shirts Disney is hawking at the Tower of Terror gift shop - "Will you hold my beer while I do your girlfriend" isn't exactly what I want my teen to wear.

I'm sorry, but unless you can provide a picture of that T-shirt being sold at Disney, I can't believe it.

Seriously, with all the cool toys and Disney stuff being sold in those gift shops, I somehow doubt that the kids are paying too much attention to the reading material.

For the most part, kids will either be a) too young to have any interest in it, and thus not pay attention, or b) be old enough to be interested, which means they probably already know more about the subject than you'd like to think.

ETA- I remember the magazines always being towards the back of the gift shops, near the "drugstore" types of things (toothbrushes, tampons, etc.). I wonder why they decided to move them up to the check out?

As a Mom I can understand how you feel. Personally, I agree with the other posters in that they see it in the supermarket and it doesn't even interest them. I also can't lie- I love Cosmo!!! princess:

I can understand the OP's concern. I think that our kids are much more "aware" than we know. While in the grocery store checkout several months back, I noticed that my 12 yr old DS walked off from me and waited at the door. When we got in the car, he asked me why Lindsey Lohan wanted to be on the cover of a magazine in her underwear. It had made him very uncomfortable. Yes, we are bombarded with these images, and with those headlines about sex, but is it appropriate for kids to see and to read, my opinion is no. They grow up too fast as it is.
