I know there have been a lot of use year questions. It seems to this novice that the use year is important for banking and borrowing issues. What would be an optimal use year (i.e. when should we make our purchase of points) for those of us who like to travel in May or October and get the optimal flexibility for borrowing. banking? Is there some kind of rule of thumb? Thanks again for any info...

From my experience, the only time Use Year really enters into anything is if you have to cancel a reservation close to the end of your Use Year. It leaves you with fewer options since you are past your banking deadline and you also run into being unable to make non-DVC reservations during the last 60 days of your Use Year. (You can stay during the last 60 days but the reservation has to be made further in advance.)

I've run into this myself. I have an April Use Year which works very well for most of my vacations. However, I've recently enjoyed going down for the Bay Hill Tournament in March and have made reservations for that time. Family problems this year caused me to have to cancel in February. My options for those points are limited to using them at a DVC resort by the end of March.

First off, you don't always have a choice what use year you can buy. It depends what Disney is offering at the time or what's available for resale. Many people don't believe it's that crucial what month you have. I know for myself, because of our situation, we may have to cancel and reschedule, so I like having a Dec use year since we travel to wdw in winter/spring this gives me time to bank my points if I don't use them by May 31. it's hard since you have two times 5 mos apart- May & Oct - when do you think you would go the most? Use years begin in Feb, Mar, April, June, Aug, Sep, Oct and Dec. So if you have an Apr use year, they have to be banked by Sept 30 (for 100%), June use year has to be banked by Nov 30. If you like to plan ahead and are pretty firm on your dates, I wouldn't worry about use year so much. If you cancel 30 days or less, you can not bank your points anyway and they have to go into a holding acct- for use for ressies no more than 60 days in advance.(it used to be 30 but I think(?) it's been changed to 60.

A little reservation and banking and borrowing 101:

1. Regardless of use year you can go anytime of year and call to make ressies 11 months in advance at home resort and 7 at others. Use year has no impact on that rule. Points you actually use are determ ined by when you will be there not when you make the ressie.

2. The only time you would borrow points is when you make a ressie. You can borrow points from a use year back into the immediately preceding use year for a trip in that use year. For example s uppose use year is Feb, meaning points for the use year are issued on Feb 1. If you wanted to call now for a trip in Feb 2002 you would be calling 11 months out at your home resort. The points you could use are (a) those to be issued in Feb 2002, which wo uld be the points from the applicable use year, and/or (b) those to be issued in Feb 2003 which you could use by borrowing; and/or (c) those points which are issued Feb 2001 which you would have to bank to use in Feb 2002.

3. You can bank the current yea r's points into the next use year for a trip in that use year subject to banking deadlines. By the end of the 6th month of the current use year you can bank 100% of your points, thus with that Feb use year you have until July 31 to bank all of your 2001 p oints into the 2002 use year. By the end of the 9th month you can bank 50% (October 31 for a Feb use year) and by the end of the 10th month 25% (November 30 for a Feb use year). Those are cumulative totals--if you bank 50% or more by the end of the 6th mo nth you can bank no more thereafter; likewise, if by the 10th month you have already banked 25% or more you cannot bank anymore in the 10th month.

4. The only potential impact use year actually has on a trip concerns your having to cancel a trip. Suppose you have a Feb use year and schedule a trip in Jan 2002 using points issued Feb 2001. In November something happens and you need to cancel. All those points go back into your regular account but you are beyond the banking deadlines except the 25% one. Th us, you couild bank 25% of the points but all the others would have to be used for a trip that concludes by the end of January. Thus, some like to get a use year that begins before the usual time of year they go to protect against that cancellation proble m. Note though that any use year beginning 6 months or less before the time usually go solves that problem as you will still be within the 6 month bankinbg window to bank all your points if you cancel.

5. Points once borrowed stay borrowed and points once banked stay banked. Thus if you were to bank points now into the 2002 use year you could not bring them back to this use year for a trip in this use year. If you borrow points and have to cancel you cannot send them back to the use year from which they were borrowed and must use them durinmg the use year into which they were borrowed.

6. Cancellations: As noted above if you cancel you can have points sent back to your regular account and still bank them if you are withing banking dates and they are cur rentuse year points. However, that is only if you cancel 31 or more days before scheduled date of arrival. If you cancel 30 days or less before scheduled date of arrival then all usual rules are out the window. All points for that canceled trip (whether c urrent year, banked or borrowed) go into a holding account and all must be used for a trip that concludes by the end of the current use year and can only be used for ressies made no more than 60 days before arrival.

Your reply to the question was very thorough thanks, but can I just make sure I have this clear:
You can make reservations before your points are put into your account as long as they are there before your first night's stay?
As soon as my close is done at the end of this month I can make ressies for Jan 2002 even tho I have a Sept use year and the points I need won't be put in there until then (Sept 2001)? That's what I am hoping anyway......

Thank You,
PT

I wonder if Disney knows how valuable this board is to perspective members. I'm debating about buying into Marriott or DVC and the existence of this board is swaying me towards DVC. There is so much information shared which makes getting the most of your membership a lot easier. Thanks everyone, I'll let you know when its a done deal.

Tess....Your understanding is right. The reservation may be made as long as the points will be there at the time of the reservation. Enjoy!

I agree the information on the boards is great! It was very helpful to me when I purchased a resale at BWV last year. I would also recommend joining the timeshare user group (tug)which provides information concerning timeshares. The BWV were rated # 1 this year and I think OKW was rated between 5th to 7th place. I found the information at that website also invaluable. The website is www.tug1.net. There is alot of information concerning the Mariott Vacation Club. Enjoy! ;)
