Sorry another AI thread but Can Somebody Explain...

why they think Katharine McPhee is so great? Really, I'm not bashing her but I just don't get the fascination with this girl. She has a pleasant voice but, holy cow, what was with the movements she was doing on stage. She looked like a puppet.

Attractive? Yes. Nice but not spectacular voice? Yes. But other girls in the top 12 were just as nice looking and could sing better. Of course that's JMHO.

So what am I missing with this girl. When Simon said she was the best of the night I almost fell off the couch. Even the DH who claims he hates AI (but watches every minute ) said Simon was nuts.

I like her--I didn't notice the movements. So I dunno.

Also keep in mind--the audio they get in studio is different from what we get on tv. Live just sounds different.

In the past--they have remarked on a contestant only to retract the statement the next day. (happens very infrequently---but it did happen and I think it was for someone who they think sounded great--may have been after they were booted, I don't recall).

She does remind me a bit of Kelly Clarkson--very colorful voice.

But I can't sing and unless someone is really bad, I cannot tell.

Everyone think the pickler girl did okay--but she reminded me of a national level pageant performance and not AI so I didn't think she was okay.

The girl who sang - oh geez, I cant remember....the one with the Mom in the audience who was 16, and her mom needed a tissue from tearing up. I didnt understand HER praise. I didnt care for her at all, with that performance.

You did shock me on that one. I found Paris to be very good. I was impressed that she sang that song in the lower registers that she did. I mean, her natural talking voice is soprano. And her stage presence was so relaxed, she looks like she has been doing this for many ears.

Just goes to show different strokes for different folks.

You won't shock me. I don't care for her either--at all. I mean obviously she is a good singer, but I just don't think she is "idol" material.

I couldn't stay up for the whole show, but from what I saw, I really like Mandisa. I think Paula was right--it's tough to do a "Heart" song--those women had incredible vocals and I thought she did a great job with the song.

I can't remember the other girl's name--she did "Because the Night." Now, I don't mind the song, but I don't think it is a great song to showcase anyone's voice and I think she blew it with that pick.

I had some problems with her performance.

First, she said that this was a (paraphrase)"Barbra Streisand song". Uh, hate to disabuse this girl of the notion that Miss Streisand invented all music, but this song was written, both words and music, by Buddy Johnson in 1948. Miss Streisand didn't even start her *career* until the '60s. The song has been recorded by singers including Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Al Jarreau, Dinah Washington, Bonnie Raitt and (the 1963 version that many are familiar with) Lenny Welch. Frankly, I was surprised that Randy didn't correct her.

I couldn't believe the judges loved her performance so much. She wasn't the worst last night but she CERTAINLY wasn't the *best* either.

I totally agree with you. I think she is a setimental favorite since Randy knows the grandmother. I did not find her a great singer and she was jumping around way too much. Keep in mind I am a Stones fan to moving on the stage does not bother me but it totally detracted from the performance OR made more of it than it truly was.
I did not mind Katherine but to tell you the truth the one who thinks she is the "minority Barbara Streisand" REALLY annoyed me and reminded me of the obnoxious Micayla from last year.

As I said in another thread Ayla Brown was very annoying too.

I thought Katharine sustained all of her notes better than the other contestants. She showed no weaknesses in any of her registers and her timbre was lovely. I didn't notice her being sharp or flat and she projected her voice properly. She had lovely phrasing and dynamics and she's got such a cute personality!!!

Some of the girls' entire performances were built around glory notes, this was not the case with Katharine. I felt she had an understated elegance.

ITA! The Lenny Welsh version was very popular and remains one of my most favorite songs EVER. I didn't even know Babs had sung that tune and I was thinking that it was weird that there were two songs with the same title.

In other words, the girl can sing, and not just *speak on pitch*, or worse yet, *scream*.

I think her stage presence is good. I don't believe the song choice was all that great and though she sang it fine--due to song choice I would have to agree that she wasn't good (though I was not annoyed by her).

I'm sure Miss Stresiand probably did record this song. It is not, however, known as a "Barbra Streisand song" the same way that "The Way We Were" is (or even "Happy Days Are Here Again"). Miss Streisand has probably recorded tens perhaps even a couple of hundred songs. To give a song the moniker of "a Barbra Streisand song" simply because this particular artist happened to record it (and her version never even hit the charts) is bizarre. That's like calling "New York, New York" a song by the rock group Queen, instead of calling it a Sinatra or Liza Minelli song.

This indicates to me that this performer doesn't know her source material very well and has an incredibly short-sighted knowledge of American popular music.

Perhaps she just didn't know.

Most time first exposure to music is a modern day rendition and it isn't as if the singer is prancing around given credit to the original artist.


Music degrees aren't required for AI (though sometimes they should be) and I had never heard of the song myself. Don't remember the title--probably will never again. But it is possible the sheet music used was from Babs version. Often times when I look at music--it may say "originally by" but I dont' remember. Prominent is the title and who arranged that particular sheet music and the artist for whom that song was arranged.

The judges have before commented on renditions of songs and it just must not have been that important of a statement to correct.

The raking her over the coals for it--a bit unnecessary.

I'm not a big fan of her either. I can't put my finger on what it is though. She has a great singing voice, but I just don't like her.

Since this thread is about Katherine, I'll say I liked her! She is in my top 4 right now.
