I realize SOTMK has now been around for a couple of years, but we have never played it and the kids want to try it this summer. Is it still pretty much the same approach of show up at one of the kiosks in the MK, receive a pack of cards and then spend mindless hours standing in front of store windows? Anything we need to have before we start, or can you still get a pretty good initial experience with the first pack of cards? How often can you get a new pack?

My son really enjoys this game, but we don't let it control our trip. You can register for the game at the kiosk next to Town Hall or also at the kiosk behind Ye Old Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square. TIP: Even if just your child will be playing the game, have each person in your group register for the game and then give all the card packs to the playing child. You can get a new pack of cards each day you are in the park, or if you complete a game in one day.

While this doesn't work for all families (depending on the age of children), we like the short break that SoMK provides for hubby and I. We will sit for a rest in one central location in a particular land while my 17 year old daughter chaperones my 10 year old from portal to portal within that land. Hope this helps!

Thanks - that is good perspective. For various reasons, we're getting APs this year and have at least three trips planned with the kids, so I figured this might be our chance to let them try it without feeling like we need to be moving at 100 MPH through the parks. Historically, we don't spend much down time while in the parks, but this year (starting in July) will hopefully be a little different.

I have been to the park once a year for the last 4 years while in the area for conferences. I would get the cards each day to bring home. new this past year I could not get a pack of cards each day unless I had completed at least one portal each day. I don't really play but I know my boys will love this when we go in August. I have been trying to collect the cards for our trip so they will have a bunch of different ones when we go.

We picked up cards for the kids this summer, as well. All we needed to do was activate at one portal, and then we got cards. We don't care to play, but the kids LOVED it - and it was great during the busy times.

I had a blast doing this in January, and my nephew (12) LOVED it when we were just there for SWW. It was a great way to do something when lines were long- we rarely had more than 1 person ahead of us at the portal, and in the evening when lines were shorter and he really wanted to play, it allowed me to rest my feet as there was almost always a spot to sit nearby.

I picked up a binder for the cards from amazon for $5 or so, and it was really nice- much better than hauling the stack around in a ziplock which is what I did in January. The books Disney sells to hold the cards are HUGE and expensive.

Bummer, not sure why our experiences were different! We just returned six weeks ago and they gave all four of us cards each of the three days we were in MK, without having completed games. (Three of us weren't actually playing.). :)

Could you possibly provide a link to the binder you found on Amazon? Thank you!

Hi everyone,

My DD(15) and I are looking forward to SotMK. When looking for info on the net, we found that there is a home version. Does anyone know where this is sold in the parks or if it is still a thing...the report was from when the SotMK first started.

Thanks

I'm not sure which version you saw on the internet, but there is a board game in one of the sets of cards you can buy. We got it at the Emporium.

I use an album that holds 4 cards per page-you can put 2 cards back to back per page since the back of the cards are all the same (unlike baseball cards) so a 10 page album can hold all 60 cards in the set. I couldn't find it at my local walmart so I ordered online. The ones Disney sells are too big to carry around.

You don't have to complete a game but you have to open a portal-can't just go in and get new cards everyday. I tried to get new cards my last day and had opened a portal but not the one I was supposed to go to and couldn't get new cards.

I've enjoyed playing it, but sometimes you'll get people a little to obsessed before you with tons of key cards that can sit there for 30 mins or more.

My DS11 really enjoys the game and the collecting aspect as well. Once he had 2 of some cards he started having characters sign their cards and that has been a ton of fun! One thing that we ran into is that your particular magic band seems to be tied to a game so you have to keep using the same one even if you have multiples. Perhaps they have fixed that by now.
