I am starting to wonder about Paula Dean and her 'nipping' during taping. That cracks me up...she is a little 'ditzy' at times.LOL. But her sons.......wow.....i'd love to cook with them. They make my kitchen HOT!!!!! Schew!!!!!!!! Wonder if I can ditch DH and hunt them up at F & W fest??????? Anyone going to see them?

Sorry, not me, I'm going in Nov. I'm missing all the ones I wanted to see- no Deen boys, (I think BF planned it that way) no Cat Cora, no Brewer's Tale. :( Oh, well. The special events w/ the Food Network Chefs all have "TBD" by my dates- so I don't know who will be there.

I can fantasize, though. ;)

I love Alton. RR is ok, but a bit to perky - and I hate that she says "EVOO- thats extra virgin olive oil".
:rotfl: I remember saying the same exact thing to my sis a few days ago. I don't get why she has to say it every single time.

Uh, I'm going with Alton on this one.

I'll take science and empirical proof over perkiness any day...
Me too, plus I love Alton.

I used to love Alton more until he said two things that just made me

First was to rinse the pasta to keep it from cooking. Sorry, but I have done it both ways and if you rinse, you don't get the sauce to stick as well! Plus does it really matter when most of the time I bake the pasta (baked dishes and mac & cheese) more anyway?

The other was when he said he has never had a home made cake that could rival a boxed cake :faint:
Sorry, I tested his theory and got the most moist cake out there so I could practice icing... it was the wost thing in the world to bake & work with.
His load of crap about the scientific concoctions they have for boxed cakes being far superior to home made didn't hold water with me.

So... in the end, I have learned Alton is a great guy... pretty bright too, but he is not the end all be all of cooking.

Really? I just saw one of his shows the other day about pasta and he said unless your going to store the pasta in the fridge, DON'T rinse it, because the sauce won't stick as well. :confused3

As for cake, I've always felt that boxed cakes made properly (as in, per directions, when it says to blend it on high for two minutes, USE A TIMER and actually blend it for two minutes, not 30 seconds and don't use the "low fat" version, it's cake it suposed to make you fat!) beat from scratch and bakery made cakes everytime. But that's just me, it's one of those things that's a personal preferance, I think.

For a great cake from a mix, use softened butter, not oil and make homemade icing- buttercream or chocolate ganache and use a fresh fruit and vanilla pudding filling (from a box is fine- but I prefer the cook-type, not instant) or a mousse or jam. No one will have any idea it's not completely homemade. The butter taste in the cake is the best. :)

ETA: Baker's Joy will make any cake jump right out of the pan and lay on a cake plate like a puppy. It is the best!

Sorry to her fans, but I automatically dismiss EVERYTHING Rachel Ray says - she has no skills, talents or qualifications other than extra teeth. I'm not sure why anyone worships at her altar! :confused3

Janey

I agree 100%

Huh? And I thought this thread was about washing mushrooms :confused3 :sad2:

So whats up with Bobby Flay?????? I must have missed something????????

The Iron Chef himself! ;)

I must say, out of all the Food Networks stars, Paula Dean and Giada are my fav. They can make anything look delicious :thumbsup2 . Semi-home Cooking with Sandra Lee is pretty good as well. She has great ideas but can sometimes go overboard with all her matching and decorations.

What about Ina Garten?

Her name seems fake to me- like "in a garden".

LOL... when ever I watch her I think the same thing

Alton... oh what a hoot. We met him breifly in person at Harry's when he was filming a segment for the episode about nuts. DD was very shy and hide behind me. Alton knelt down in fornt of her and told her not to worry, he hadn't eaten any children all week.
Pasta does seem tobe only subject he has changed his mind about. I think he has said both about rinsing it. I know oncehe said to never add oil the water, then later on took it back and said to add oil to help keep it from boiling over.

RR... I like her, and get some great ideas from 30 min meals. She is a bit too perky however.

Paula... love her

Bobby Flay.... oh yuck. Never really liked him, but then that fit her had when he lost on Iron Chef (the origional Iron Chef, BF was a challenger and had a hissy because he lost)

Aww, I love Alton- what a cute story w your DD!

ITA about Bobby Flay. He seems sooo cocky!

The first time he was a challenger and he threw the hissy, he stood onhis cutting board, which upset the real Iron Chef bc in Chinese/Japanese culture cooking instruments are considered sacred. So the second time he challenged him again, he *threw* the cutting board to the floor first and then stood on the counter. Like throwing was any more respectful of an act. That was pretty juvenile, IMO.
