Sony Lens

Would this be a good lens for my a57,
Tamron SP A016 17-50mm F/2.8 Di-II XR AF IF
or should I get this one instead,
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM.

One of them will be mine!

I use the Tamron. Don't know about the Sigma. The Tamron is a very good kit lens replacement. Nice constant aperture lens, it's sharp and it's a good value. (I actually bought a used copy for $290).

I use it as my indoor lens and landscape lens. It's always in my camera bag or on my camera. (My bag is usually the Tamron 17-50, my 50/2.8 macro, and then either my 50/1.7 (for low light), or something with more reach (minolta 35-105, a great outdoor general use lens, my 70-210/4-- outdoor portraits, and semi-lowlight telephoto, or my Tamron 70-300 for outdoor reach).

HPS3 might know, I think Harry has used both lenses. Ive only used the Tamron so can't really say either way.

I've never heard of the Tamron 18-50/2.8-4... Not on dyxum either. Is it new?

My bad havoc315, the Tamron is a 17-50.
You have to keep me straight, I will read something and then forget what I just read.
Right now I'm torn between lens that are variable 17-50 f/2.8 and those that are Prime 30mm, 35mm, 20mm, 14mm you get the picture.
I want a lens that I can use indoors and out and will not have to chase the shot like you would with a 50mm Prime (use to have one). This makes me lean towards a variable like the 17-50 f/2.8. On the other hand a good wide Prime at f/1.7 or 1.8 would take away my worries about low-light indoor shots.
On a variable I like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 but I can not find one I can afford (under $300). I have found the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 for $200.
You guys help make it easy for me by answering my questions no matter how many times I might ask the same ones or keep me straight when I mis-type (or in my case not know what I'm talking about. What can I say It's just old age.

My first lens was the Sony kit lens followed by a Sony 50mm f1.8 and then a 35mm f1.8. I bought them with taking low light pictures in mind but found I only used them sporadically. That is when I bought my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and ended up using that and my fisheye almost 3/4 of the time. I sold my 50mm and now have the 35mm and really only break it out on dark rides lol.

You can get the Tamron on eBay for right around $300. Maybe a little less. There are a few copies there now in that range.

The extra stop will make a big difference indoors, compared to the Sigma. That's why the sigma is cheaper.

You can add a Minolta 50/1.7 from eBay for under $70 for low light needs. Such a small lens, easy to carry without adding bulk.
That lens is one of the best values you will find.
