Just bought this camera today & it has a lens hood. I've researched what a lens hood is (still confused) but I'm curious as to whether I need it for everyday use. I liked it in the store and bought a camera bag but with the lens hood on I'll need another camera bag which is no big deal but I'm curious as to whether I need it on all the time.

Thanks to all you photograph experts. I'm in hopes I will be able to keep up w/you folks and all the camera lingo in time. I love taking pics.

Lens hoods are very useful to prevent glare and lens flares when you are shooting outside with the sun anywhere in front of the camera. I leave the hoods on my DSLR lenses all the time for protection of the front element rather than using a protective filter.

Though I could understand why you would want to leave the H9's lens hood behind, it's a monster compared to the overall size of the camera.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll put it on - thats one of the first thing the manual says to do so I guess I'd better.

Let me kow how you like your H9. I'm thinking about getting one in the next few weeks.
Thanks,
Elena

So far I really like it. The menu and controls are very easy to understand. I'm leaving it on auto for now - once we get to disney I'll try out the NightShot and the other settings like Beach & Fireworks. I've taken about 10 pics and the pics look amazing on the screen -very crisp and sharp. Its real fun. I love the zoom it really gets up close and focuses well. I do like the size of the camera. A lot of people like the compact cameras - I don't. I'm sure they take great pictures too but for me I like the bigger camera. They're easy to hold onto and the buttons aren't so close together. I can't wait to experiment w/the manual controls but for now I'm going to leave it on auto until we get back from our trip.

My son had his pic taken yesterday at his soccer game by a professional photographer and I asked the photographer about the lens hood. He said the same at the PP and that it helps the glare from the sun. But that I don't need it on all the time for that reason just when I think I need it. He also said the lens hood protects the lens as well so he does leave his own most of the time. I can see why - I'm sure he has thousands of dollars invested in his equipment.

I do need to get a good padded camera bag. The lens hood makes it a pretty long camera so I'll take that into consideration when buying a bag. Good luck w/your decision. I had it down to a Canon SD850 IS (compact) and the H9. I'm glad I got the H9. Canon has the S5 series which is a bigger camera like the H9 but it uses AA batteries and I wanted a lithium rechargeable camera. Have fun.

I just purchased the H7, which is pretty much the same as the H9 sans the LCD screen that flips up and the night vision...I love the camera so far. I am an amateur at best, so take my review for what it is...so far it is great-I am having fun learning about the camera! I just bought it the other day.

I too am going to look for a good bag!
