This is driving me nuts! :furious:
My son started school last Wed. and Thursday at midnight the teachers decided to go on strike (there was talk about this for about 2 weeks, but since they started school, i thought it was taken care of).
As of today the teachers lost there pay and healthcare. The school disctrict people filed an illegal strike because i guess they didn't go through all the proper steps for a legal strike. It is just a huge mess. I hate that this is going on now! My son is already going to be missing 5 days in 2 weeks!
Sorry just had to vent.

I feel your pain. Our dds went through this 3 years ago. The strike lasted 3 and 1/2 weeks! Thankfully, it was over a few scheduled days off, so they ended up only missing 10 school days which got made up by not taking other holidays, and taking on 5 days to the end of the year.

That's so sad to me! The children suffer all the way around! :(

Here in Michigan there is no such thing as a "legal" strike by school employees. As a student who had to makeup strike days years ago and a parent who had to deal with it when my children were in school I feel your pain. Now, as a district employee who has gone as many as 4 years without a contract, I can see where they may be coming from. It is so hard. Here the public does not get involved or support the staff until they picket (during non work hours) or refuse to do "extras" and then they say the staff is hurting the children. Get involved, see what they are asking for, go to board meetings and then if you feel they deserve their requests, please support your district employees and then they may never need to strike. Ok, done with my rant....Hope it is all resolved soon and the kids are back where they belong! Have a great vacation!!!!

I am a teacher, and I don't feel we should use the children as pawns, either. We have never had a teacher strike where I live, and I hope and pray we never do. I don't think anyone wins in this type of situation. I know that we, like other workers, would like more money, better insurance, etc., but I don't think striking is the way to go about getting changes made.

In the newspaper today it stated that they aren't just looking for better pay/insurance, but the high school teachers are fearing for there lives. They are looking for more stern punishment to students that threaten the teachers, because it's the same students every time. I'm with the teachers on there strike. I believe teachers are WAY underpaid, and i don't think any of them should fear for there lives. Hopefully if it continues, it will continue up until we get back from vacation!
Thanks for all the responses on this.

Maybe if we paid them a decent salary and gave back control of their classrooms, fewer teachers would strike. Think about it, most teachers today are graduating with master's degrees, yet we pay them a working poor salary. No matter what their specialty, they could be making far more money working in the private sector. Then we expect them to deal with the derelicts of society who have little to no respect for authority but a great deal of entitlement. We had a lawsuit here because some high-school girl with several unexcused absences and low grades got cut from the cheer squad. Personally, I have a great admiration for teachers and believe they are the most undervalued members of society.

If that girl were my kid, the school wouldn't have had to worry about cutting her from the squad...I would have done it myself!

agnes!
