I hope I stuck this in the right section. Last 2 times I posted I put it in the wrong spot and I swear I am posting in the community section. I dont know what I am doing . :confused3

Anyway I need some advice. I have no one to really ask or speak to. My mom was just kinda like " Oh well at least you know something. Its better than nothing. " Hence why I dont speak to her anymore.

My 9 yr old son has been having headaches off and on now along with periods of feeling like his throat was tight or closed up. He is PN - TN allergic so we thought he might have reacted to something in his enviorment. Well I finally decided after a month to take him in for labs and insisted on a thyroid and a ANA as well as a few other things.

He would point to his throat at the base specifically and say it hurt there. AND my DD 16 was diagnosed at 13 with extremely high levels of TSH and disgnosed with Hypothroidism . We found out when she started that time of month and had hemmoraging . We found out her levels were over 40 . She is on meds now and doing fine. Her thyroid tests indicated it was the result of a autoimmune process but not Hashimotos.

Thats why I really was concerned with my son. There has been ( as I learned only recently) a strong link between infants fed soy formula and PN - TN allergies and also thyroid issues in kids. Isomil uses that monsanto soy at that. If I had known then ...

But anyway the ANA came back negative. And I know my DD never complained about the tight feeling or lump in her throat. So I am not sure exactly what I am dealing with. Is a positive ANA required for a diagnosis of Hashimotos ? Any ideas what it can be? Cant seem to get clear info online. Not many thyroid things are both tight throat and high TSh only mostly hyper not hypo thyroid things . Except hashimotos of course and the ANA was negative . Has anyone had these symptoms ( tight throat , headaches and high TSH ) ? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

And of course prayers. We have to go for more tests this week. My son is stressed about getting more tests done and I am putting on a happy / positive face but worried myself. I hate doctors and tests and that kinda stuff. Hate seeing my son go through it. On our way now to go get more labs.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's at 13 and felt like a had a 'blockage' in my throat. Once my medication kicked in the goitre went down and this feeling went away. I didn't have any other symptoms and was healthy other than that. I have been taking thyroxine for 26 years.

Sorry, I can't be of much help but I have always found this website to be a pretty comprehensive source of information.

I hope your son is OK.

Thank u so much. It sounds horrible but Hashimotos would make sense and make me less worried about why the thyroid is enlarged. And I am very glad to hear you have been managing well since your diagnosis.

The only thing that made me doubt it was the fact he did have a negative ANA. Did you ever have a ANA done ? Was it negative or positive ( if you dont mind me asking ) ? What tests did you have to go through before you got a diagnosis?

I just got back a few minutes ago from the lab. It took a hour this time to get my son to calm down. He kept pulling his arm away . he had labs done just the other day and hs poor arms were still sore.

I know this time they are doing a complete thyroid workup along with a test to check for antibodies. I wasnt sure if there was a specific lab test for Hashimotos or not. I will check out your link and see what I can find out. Thanks :)

As far as I am aware, they tested for antibodies. I think there was a specific blood test to diagnose the condition. I'm not sure as it was 26 years ago and tests have probably moved on now. I know it took a long time as they didn't expect a child to have an autoimmune disorder.:confused3 They thought it was a goitre for a while. I was put on 300mcg of thyroxine daily to begin with, so I'm guessing it was pretty bad.

Hashimoto's has never really presented me with that many problems. I have regular check-ups and I always take my thyroxine. It was flagged up during my pregnancies and I was monitored closely. If your son has it, it's not too bad; although it does mean you are more susceptible to other autoimmune disorders.

I hope you get the answers you need from these latest tests.

Tinytreasures-
Thanks for the info. I will make a note of it for our next apt. . I hope all your tests come back fine.

Update:
Unfortunately we are back were we started just as I thought we were going to get somewhere. The second set of labs we did they screwed up! They were inconclusive they said . On top of that the doctor we had we decided to leave. He was not our first choice but when our insurance changed we had to leave our longtime pedatrician whom we did love and go with him. He has no bedside manner at all in fact he was very rude and uncaring with his patients.

The ultrasound we had scheduled for Tuesday he decided to cancel on us at the minute because he wanted a ear nose throat refferal visit in first. Why? My son is miserable and they will just order the same thing anyway. And my sons thyroid TSH was high so why not a endo. instead ? I was polite when I asked but the nurse yelled at me " Because hes the doctor and he doesnt think a ultrasound will give a good picture of the throat!" . I was really taken aback . her argument made no sense but rather than fight with rude nasty people I just got a copy of our records.

So now we are looking at getting the kids in with a good ped . doctor which is hard because we are rural. They were the closest before. On the plus side no headaches or troubles swallowing yesterday. ( Day before though) So for now its just back to square one again.
