Songs that are often used inappropriately/misunderstood...

I'll fess up to a song played at MY wedding reception though I didn't dance to it(Thank God). Told the DJ we liked Irish music specifically rebel songs. My family will dance to anything with a beat really. But during dinner and a small break in conversation I turned to my DH and OMG he's playing Danny Boy!

How wrong can you get? :headache:

I am learning so much that I didn't know...the she bop song makes sense now that I know the meaning. OMG...I am so naive :)

When we were planning our wedding (a LONG time ago) every single DJ we spoke to showed us a playlist that included Theme from M*A*S*H. When we expressed surprise and wondered why, they told us that it was a popular request for the first dance!

Did NO ONE see the original movie? The actual title of the song is "Suicide Is Painless", and it is played (and SUNG) in a scene where the doctors pretend to help a colleague commit suicide -- because he had become impotent and was very depressed about it.

Tell me about it! I am normally not your naive type person and I did not know that until my husband told me a few years back.:rotfl2:

In high school I had a friend named Sheila and we all called her "She-bop" because the song was popular then.

OH DEAR!!!

:blush::blush::blush:

I've seen it used so many times and I can't help but cringe whenever "Daughters" by John Mayer is chosen for the father/daughter dance at weddings. It is not a happy daddy & me song! The whole thing is about a guy trying to love a girl who has been royally screwed up by her father. My dad would have considered that song selection a slap in the face.

I know I've got more...gonna have to think on it a little bit, but I'm constantly bringing things like this up. lol

"I don't like Mondays"
It seems to get played on Mondays just because just about everyone hates for the weekend to end. But it's really tragic.

I'm almost positive that song is about a shooting that took place near my house in the 70's, because the person didn't like Mondays. No joke. But I emphasize the "almost positive".

Not a wedding song, but I have to change the station every time I hear that song Pumped Up Kicks (not sure that is the official title). It is about a kid shooting other kids at school because of their clothing!!! It freaks me out and I can't believe it is even allowed on the radio.

Alcohol by Barenaked Ladies - Actually, a lot of Barenaked Ladies songs are not what they seem to be.

This isn't quite the same thing, but Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison was originally about an interracial relationship and titled Brown Skinned Girl.

This is another one that isn't quite what you're asked for (and may be fighting words to some), but Whitney Houston's rendition of I Will Always Love You has always bothered me, because it's not at all in keeping with the lyrics.

Doesn't the Brown Eyed Girl get knocked up in that song? "My, you have grown!" I always assumed he meant around the middle.

I loved knowing what She-Bop was about and not telling people. It was my own private giggle to hear older people hum along.

It's a minor difference, but I've heard Foster the People say that it's about a kid who feels like an outcast who is fantasizing about shooting his classmates.

Puff The Magic Dragon is supposedly about smoking pot, although the members of Peter Paul and Mary say its not. Little Jackie Paper? Hmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

Well alrighty then:rolleyes1

I could never understand the lyrics to that 1 anyway.

Go watch the video on YouTube! I remember I thought the song was all cute and fuzzy and thennnnnnnn I saw the video. Ohhhhhmmmmmyyyyy. It all became crystal clear what she was talking about. I was really surprised to find out most people had no clue!

Of course I had friends who, even in HS, didn't quite grasp why Frankie Goes to Hollywood said to Relax.;)

The one that shocked me with how many people didn't get the song has got to be Jelly Roll. I somehow missed that song until it was played in my spin class. I asked the instructor and she thought it was just fine and claimed she knew what the song was about. . .uhm. No. I then asked some friends and co-workers all of whom thought they knew what the song was about, but none of them actually did.

And Tutti Frutti. . .I know the song was mostly rewritten to get it released, but I still can't hear that song without hearing the real lyrics in my head!

If you lived in the San Diego area in 1979, then you are right.

I think a common theme here is love songs that aren't really love songs...

I just found out a couple of weeks ago the real meaning of Lady Gaga's the Edge of Glory. I always assumed it was about falling in love or something in that area but that's not the case at all. She wrote it with her father while her grandfather was dying. It's about being about to die and being close to heaven and eternal life. A lot more spiritual than you would think.

pumped up kicks does have a bad meaning. One day I had the song in my head ... it is so darn catchy ....it was driving me nuts. I should have started singing Its a Small World or the Tiki Room Song. LOL. Anyhow it just goes to show how true the American Bandstand comments were...e.g. it is has a great beat and I can dance to it ...no one that I recall ever said it has a positive uplifting message!

Ha, "We've Got Tonight" was my junior prom song (in 1996, years after it first came out!) and I still laugh thinking about it. I am sure the school administration would be thrilled to know our prom theme was basically "Let's have a one night stand!"

Hahahaha... That was my junior prom song too in 94. But we used the remake not the original.
