Songs about change/changing/move/moving/go/going etc

"Without You" by Avicii
vocal by Sandro Cavazza

This is a song about the impending loss of a love...and how to handle it. It is also the song producers chose as the opening number for the Avicii Tribute Concert in Stockholm following his death -- because it talks about moving on.

Avicii's real name, which his friends always used, was Tim Bergling. He was a giant of EDM music, but his music was incredibly diverse -- from hip-hop to gospel, and everything in between. The lead guitarist is Carl Falk, Tim's longtime collaborator and producer of the Tribute Concert. Sandro Cavazza is a Swedish vocalist, and also longtime collaborator.

"I gotta learn how to love without you
I gotta carry my cross without you
Stuck in the middle, and I'm just about to
Figure it out without you.

I'm tired of sitting home without you
Gosh, oh my oh my, I'm goin' out without you
I'm gonna tear this city down without you
I'm goin' Bonnie & Clyde without you!

Let's Be Lonely Together by Avicii
Vocal by Rita Ora

Another Avicii Tribute Concert song, sung by English vocalist Rita Ora. It's about needing to change, but losing the battle...

(If you watch the entire 2+ hour concert video on YouTube, you'll see something interesting. Rita Ora is onstage almost constantly as a background singer. I'm guessing that she started out as a background singer early in her career, as many do, and that she just got carried away during rehearsals and decided to do background the entire show.)

It's my head or my heart
And I'm caught in the middle

My hands are tied, but not tight enough
You're the high that I can't give up
Oh lord, here we go

I might hate myself tomorrow
But I'm on my way tonight
At the bottom of a bottle
You're the poison in the wine

And I know
I can't change you, and I
I won't change
I might hate myself tomorrow
But I'm on my way tonight
Let's be lonely together
A little less lonely together

Supposedly Swedish House Mafia had a big influence on Avicii while he was developing his style. I was a huge fan of SHM before they disbanded (they may be reuniting?). Not sure if you’re familiar with them. This is one of my favorite songs and about changes/reminiscing. It’s also a goodbye video.

There was a time
I used to look into my father's eyes
In a happy home
I was a king, I had a golden throne
Those days are gone
Now they're memories on the wall
I hear the songs from the places where I was born
Up on a hill across the blue lake
That's where I had my first heartbreak
I still remember how it all changed
My father said
Don't you worry, don't you worry, child
See heaven's got a plan for you
Don't you worry, don't you worry now

It's kind of crazy, because I'm not a fan of EDM, house, dance or most of that kind of music. Don't know much about it, and I stumbled upon Avicii completely by accident. I discovered that several songs I'd heard (Hey Brother, Wake Me Up, Lonely Together, and others) were, in fact, Avicii-written songs.

But yes, I am familiar with Swedish House Mafia -- primarily via my DD's skate sister, who is a big fan of that kind of music. I know they were friends with Avicii, but I'm not sure who influenced who...probably both ways. I've read that they are credited with getting him back into DJing shortly before his death.

And yes, Swedish House Mafia DID reunite -- right here in Miami, at Ultra, naturally. I think they have a tour going on right now and are coming back here -- probably for Ultra.

"Back to Before," from Ragtime
There was a time when you were the person in motion
I was your wife, it never occured to want more
You were my sky, my moon and my stars and my ocean
We can never go back to before
We can never go back to before

"Red River Valley," Suzy Bogguss
I’ve been thinking a long time, my darlin’,
Of the sweet words you never would say,
Now, alas, all my fond hopes must vanish.
For they say you are going away...

"It Takes Two," from Into the Woods
You've changed.
You're daring.
You're different in the woods.
More sure.
More sharing.
You're getting us through the woods...

I was in a band.
We never had an official name but closet was probably Salty Side Down.
Years later I googled the name shocked to see there is a band called Salty Side Down
I always wonder if they got name the same way.
This was the lyrics I wrote for Song #12 we never titled them

Song # 12
Feel the sweat roll into my eyes
know that I'm about to break
Keep filling it up wit more lies
Don't know how much more it can take

Oh I got to get out of here
Got to clear my mind out straihgt
Take a look in the rear view mirror
and head on that long cold drive today

Things get so hard to handle
As their water margins grow
It's like you don't think it's their business
Or you're just afraid to let them know.

Oh I got to get out of here
And feel that cool breeze in my face
Let it blow away all my tears
On that long cold drive today

It's like Im afraid to substitute
Let some good time slip away
To think I never realized
Im the one who has to change

THrow my head back and the car in gear
I always knew there'd come the day
When I had nothing left to fear
Except that long Cold Drive Away
