Song of the South. Can you get a legitimate copy anywhere?

Son loves everything Disney, and I would like to get hold of a copy of Song of the South for him, but don't know if it is available anywhere. I know it was removed due to controversy, but I remember seeing the movie as a child, and had limited but fond memories of it.

I got a VHS copy of it and am having it transferred to DVD. Try Froogle or eBay for best results.

Those often aren't legitimate. OP, you probably won't be able to get one. And I have a feeling you knew that.

It seems to check out on our VHS player... I'm putting off watching it until it's on DVD so I can watch it in my room.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones?

They sell it in other countries so you can try and find a region free disc but finding one here is probably not going to happen. Of course you can find anything on the Internet if you have a torrent client.

Too many people get all wambulancy here about the movie so I highly doubt Disney sees the upside of releasing it and then dealing with the negative publicity.

Any true Disney fan would know that SOTS has carried with it, a measure of controversy since its' last public screening in 1986 (which coincided with the opening of the SOTS-inspired "Splash Mountain" attractions at DL/WDW).

As such, it has never been made available to the North American home video market for sale/rental to the general public (though certain animated musical numbers were made available on the "Sing-Along Songs" VHS tapes that were widespread during the 90's).

This is something the Walt Disney Company seems to revisit/struggle with, every few years, with the end result always being not to bring it out of the Disney vault. Personally, I believe no movies should ever be suppressed from the public -- my take on it is if nobody wants to purchase this film for their Disney library, the low sales numbers will speak for themselves, as Disney is all about making money on their works.

As Warner Bros. had been dealing with a similar situation over the years with their "Censored Eleven" Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoon shorts (most famous - and controversial - among them was Bob Clampett's "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs"), Warner eventually saw fit to begin work on restoration of these shorts for an eventual release through their "Warner Archive" program.

That said, it's not a question of "if?", but rather "when?" Disney will begin restoration work on SOTS for an eventual re-release (I would think the proper way to deal with this in a matter to please most is to sell it directly through the Disney Movie Club, or a similar vehicle).

Funny, but there's nothing like being told I can't buy something to make me start Googling for a place to purchase it.

The full movie was available on youtube last time I looked (in fact, I captured it and copied it to DVD), but I can't find it now. I posted a link to it on a previous thread; I just looked for it and I found the thread but my post doesn't seem to be there. :scratchin

You can get a copy on DVD... But it is only available from the Uncle Remus Museum, located in Eatonton, Ga (birthplace of Joel Chandler Harris). I believe it is available for purchase online, though I purchased one for my brother at the museum itself (while living in Eatonton).

It has been reproduced by a company located in Marietta, Georgia but the quality of the film is great! (It far surpasses the video my grandmother acquired in my childhood that was complete with Japanese subtitles!)

I hope this helps!

While attending the Indiana State fair last August, I came across a vendor booth selling a large variety of movies. What really caught my attention was a small tv screen showing a snippet of Song Of The South. My husband and I were skeptical but the couple running the booth assured us it was a good quality and would play in any DVD player....I decided to take a chance. I bought one and we watched it that night...awesome and no problems with quality at all. Went back the next day and purchased four more copies for family.

The only authorized copy I've ever seen on home video was an import LaserDisc copy from Japan. However, that would have subtitles. Since LD didn't encode subtitles they would be part of the picture unlike DVD or Blu-Ray subtitles that are encoded separately and can be turned off.

The box has the Walt Disney Classics cover image of the movie and shows it was distributed in the UK by Buena Vista. No subtitles or interruptions of any kind, perfect color and just as I remembered seeing as a child. I don't know where the vendor got it, just that they had several on display and all with the same image.

We had the laser disc version. it had two sound tracks -- one in English, one in Japanese. It was really strange to hear Uncle Remus speak in Japanese.

the songs weren't translated but they had the Japanese subtitles.

We were in Blue Ridge GA at Christmas a few years ago just wandering around the little shops and found it for sale. There were several copies on DVD for $20. I was really surprised to see it and questioned the clerk and he said it would play. So I took a chance and bought it. We took it back to the cabin and played it that night. I just looked at the DVD and there is a slip of paper in it with a company name, address, phone number and website. Don't know if it is still active or not.

I don't know if it's still on you tube but if so you can watch it with your son on your computer, laptop, or tablet if you don't mind seeing it on YouTube
