"Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one." - 1st Training Journal (comments welcome!)

I’m curious, why are you still using Nike and Garmin? You may have mentioned it earlier. It doesn’t bother you to have to start/stop two programs?
I’m wondering because I just got a Garmin. I was a little sad that my history in Runkeeper might be lost, but then realized last night that Garmin feeds into Runkeeper.

I use Nike on my Apple Watch, but I bought the Garmin because the battery life on my Apple Watch wasn’t cutting it for every day use and my runs anymore. I didn’t want to give up the Apple Watch completely, so I bought the Garmin just for runs. I use both because I’ve always used Nike so it has all of my previous run history, and I’m not completely sure but I don’t think Garmin links to it. It doesn’t bother me at all, it’s just a part of my routine at this point. The only problem is when I’m in a rush and off my game, that’s when I tend to forget one!

Well, if you’re interested, Garmin does feed into and upload runs to Nike Run Club if you want to set it up! Obviously whichever works best for you, but it’s an option if you want all your info in one spot, but don’t want to be using two devices on the run :).

Good to know, thank you! I'll look into it this weekend.

Weekday runs are so difficult to get done. It gets so dark so fast, so I'm always rushing to get myself out there early enough after work. That's the most challenging part of training for me so far.

I had to do today's run at our local high school track. As it got darker I became more and more uncomfortable there. Finding a safe place to get these 6 mile runs done after work continues to be difficult.

I felt good throughout the run, but when I got into the 7th mile my leg muscles started to get tired. I felt good about today's long run. I wore my new UA jacket today (I've been wearing it this week for warmth) and it really worked, but it actually worked too well for my long run. It wasn't until afterwards when I took off the jacket that I realized my back was wet with sweat. This might be a jacket I consider for my heat acclimation training.

Week 15 ✅

Only 33 more training runs until the marathon! :cheer2:

Schedule question for @DopeyBadger:

I know we've discussed the importance of following the training plan as written, and I've been able to stick to that for the most part. With Thanksgiving this week, I'm wondering if I should take advantage of being off on Thursday to get my M Tempo run done Thursday morning as opposed to Wednesday evening. I'm not sure if that would be a problem since it would lead to me running Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I can definitely leave it as is, I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile to do it Thursday morning and not have to run in the dark.

Thanks!

It's best as is. But if it would make things easier, then this is how I would change it based on how the plan is written including information from the week prior and after:

M- OFF
T- 45 min run (was 30 min run)
W- OFF
R- M Tempo workout
F- 30 min run
Sa- 60 min run (was 80 min run)
Su- 90 min run

I want to take some of the edge off the Saturday run given you've got a sequence of 4 days in a row now. Secondarily, you'll have more time between last week's 130 min run and the M Tempo on Thurs. So I bumped up Tues slightly. Still a recovery like run, but a little more volume given the off day that comes after now and increase space to the M Tempo.

I decided to stick to my original plan and did today's short run on my block. It was a long day, and it was freezing outside so I just wanted to get it done. I did get the weather before running, but when I finished I just wanted to get inside so I didn't get the end stats.

Today's run was a mess. I changed the alerts on my Garmin to 1:30/30 to match the timing needed for today's M Tempo run, and used my phone for the Easy pace miles. I wish there was an option to set more than one Run/Walk alert. I know I can create a workout but I never seem to be able to figure out the right number of repeats. Anyway...

I needed to do 6 miles and I knew it would get dark soon so I went back to the local track. Of course it was being used when I got there, so I ran a little more than the first mile on the side streets. In my hurry to get started I forgot to check the start weather, but I did get the end.

I was admittedly very uncomfortable during this run. I didn't pay as much attention to my pacing as I normally would, because my focus was on my surroundings. It was also very cold, and I just wanted to be done. Since I haven't linked my Garmin to my Nike app yet, I continued to run with both and noticed my Garmin was increasing in mileage much faster than my Apple Watch. I was running on a track, so I tried to pay attention to the distance for one lap around and the Nike app seemed to be on track so I kept going. The next time I looked, the Nike app was a quarter mile behind my Garmin. I made the decision to stop at 6 miles on the slower watch, because I'd rather run a little more than less.

Total Time: 1:18:23
Avg. Pace: 13'03"/mi

2 = 13'00"
3 = 12'16"
4 = 12'49"
5 = 12'25"
6 = 13'40"

(Garmin)
Focus: Marathon Training - M Tempo: 1 mile @ Easy + 4 miles @ 90/30 @ 11:30/17:30 paces + 1 mile @ Easy
Distance: 6.31 mi
Total Time: 1:18:08
Avg. Pace: 12'24"/mi
Splits:
1 =

2 = 12'25"
3 = 11'45"
4 = 12'06"
5 = 11'37"
6 = 12'46"
7 = 13'01"

My pace was clearly all over the place. Nevertheless, without realizing it, I made the right decision because my end time was 1:18 and the plan called for 1:19. Whatever the final mileage actually was, at least I got the time in!

By the end of the run my fingers were freezing (despite wearing gloves). I ended the workouts on both watches and started an outdoor walk on my Apple Watch, and then my Apple Watch froze and turned off. Yet another reason why I'm happy to have my Garmin. I started a walk on my Garmin for a quarter mile as I headed back to my car.

Outdoor Walk:
Focus: Cool down
Distance: 0.24 mi
Total Time: 0:04:21
Avg. Pace: 17'38"/mi

When I got back in the house my Apple Watch turned back on (running the outdoor walk I had just started before it turned off). The battery clearly wasn't dead, so I guess the only explanation is that it got too cold.
Unfortunately the run on the didn't sync to the Nike app, but it did save on the Apple Activity app. (EDIT TO ADD: I just went back and the run appeared on the Nike app, so I was able to go back and add the splits to this post.)

I'm happy to have gotten the run done, but it was nerve wracking. I just have to get through the rest of these evening runs safely, and then it'll be marathon day and it'll all be worth it.

I decided to switch it up a bit and listen to some DIS podcasts during this run instead of my regular music playlist. I wasn't sure if I'd like it so I picked a couple short ones to start. At first I thought this wasn't for me, and I figured I'd switch back to my regular playlist once it ended, but I ended up getting lost in it and starting another one. I don't think I'd listen to podcasts regularly, but it was a nice change and a way to get caught up on some Disney updates.

I wore my warm jacket again so I wasn't too cold when I was running, but it made my shirt sweaty and the wind made me feel incredibly uncomfortable by the end. By the end I skipped my post run stretch because I was so cold. I took a warm shower and put some warm clothes on until I finally warmed up!

Here in solidarity with you about how much I dislike cold weather. We've gotten about 4in of snow since Thursday morning and I am in no way looking forward to Wednesday when firearm deer season is over and I will feel OK with running outside again. I will say that on Thursday I wore TWO pairs of leggings and that seemed to keep my legs from getting too cold. Both were hot-weather type leggings, so I'm sure if I were actually willing to spend the money on winter leggings it would be even better.

Thank you, I needed that lol. The leggings are definitely a challenge because I finally found ones I love but they’re warm weather leggings. I don’t want to spend a ton of money trying to find the right winter leggings, so I’m just dealing with it for now, but time will tell how long that will last! :rotfl:

Today's run was SO much better than yesterday's. The wind finally died down which made for a much more comfortable run.

START:
Weather Conditions: Snow Shower
Temp + Dew Point: 36 + 27 = 63
Feels Like: 34
Wind: SSW 3 mph
Humidity: 69%
UV Index: 0
Running Conditions Index: 1

Clearly the weather app and I have differing opinions on running conditions. For what it's worth, today's "snow shower" was really just snow flurries. I'll choose today's 1 over yesterday's 4 every time!

END:
Weather Conditions: Cloudy
Temp + Dew Point: 37 + 29 = 66
Feels Like: 35
Wind: SSE 3 mph
Humidity: 72%
UV Index: 1
Running Conditions Index: 4

I went back to my music playlists today. I also decided to continue using both devices to track my miles, because this time the Garmin decided to be slower (even though they tracked the same for most of the run).

Week 16 ✅

One more scheduling advice question for @DopeyBadger (hopefully this will be the last one with only 6 weeks to go!). I have a number of appointments this week, and I just found out I have one this Wednesday evening that I can't miss. I could probably do a max of 30 min that day. Would it be bad to switch Tuesday's 2 mi Easy/LR with Wednesday's M Tempo? I don't want to miss the miles, and I could do more on Tuesday, but I definitely won't be able to fit in the 1:19:31 currently scheduled on Wednesday.

Anyway...

What about just doing the easy WU/CD at the same 90/30 intervals? And when it's time to do M Tempo, you just speed up. It's not a huge difference between 80/30 of easy and 90/30 of M Tempo.

Tuesday can work fine.

Oh my goodness, I don't know why I didn't think of that... :rotfl2:Thank you, that makes so much more sense lol.

Perfect, thanks again!
