Something wrong with the lilacs around here..

My lilac bloomed and then promptly died.... so did my neighbors. They are both the light colored purple flowers. Now my friend up the street has a dark lilac that looks great! I was wondering if there was anything that lilacs are prone to that killed the 2 near my house. It really bummed me out...... I can usually count on that smell wafting in my windows for about 2 weeks!

Instant death like that is usually the caused by borers. That would be my first guess.
